I was speaking to my Dad last night and we got round to the day when we turned over Hull after going two down. Anyway, I had to look it up and was amazed it was in August 2006 - seems a lifetime ago! Goals from McIndoe, Richards and Hayes saw us complete a brilliant comeback - it was a cracking day out from what I remember. So, my question is to you, what games from our best stand out as memorable to you personally, but others may have forgot? We all remember our trips to Wembley and the big wins, but what about the lesser remembered wins? Go!
I'm rubbish at remembering scores of games but 1997 Grimsby away. I cant remember the goal order but we'd lost a couple of games prior to that I think. Just sticks in my mind as one of the games of our promotion season.
Oldham 1-2 Barnsley, November 2015. We'd lost 8 games in a row in the league and cup, were bottom of League 1 and barely 600 bothered to go across the Pennines on a freezing day. Hourihane scored an absolute thriker, Oldham equalised quite late on and naturally I thought we'd bottled it and would never win a game again. Then up popped Kevin Long in the last minute for us - celebrated like we'd won the league with my Dad, who'd been stood with me on that crumbly deathtrap at Altrincham a couple weeks previous. Don't think I've celebrated a winner as much as that until Walsall away last season.
I will go back to 1965/6. A midweek game under floodlights on 8th March. We beat Rochdale 5-0 in division 4. This was the season before we nearly went bust, so the crowd was small, 3,428. It is memorable for the opening goal from Joe Hayes. It was a screamers from over 20 yards out. He scored another, Bob Earnshaw also got 2 and Bettany got the other. Joe Hayes was in the twilight of his career which included a cup final goal for Manchester City in the mid 1950s. He only played one season for us and scored only 3 goals. We finished 16th that season and only avoided having to apply for re-election to the league by winning our last 2 games against Wrexham and Southport 3-0 and 4-0 respectively. It puts our current situation into a little perspective.
Stockport away. It was snowing, we crashed the car. It was either boxing day or New Years' Day. It was probably the match that Ashley Ward wasn't allowed to play in (could be wrong on that). Carlton Palmer was playing for them, and it was almost 90 minutes of "Carlton Palmer, you're a wan.." ... well let's say abuse. Then he scored a spectacular own goal. We crossed the ball in from the right* with nobody in the middle and he just smashed it into the net. Beauty. From then on it was, "One Carlton Palmer, there's only one Carlton Palmer". * My memory has faded, I might be wrong.
It was the 26th December 1998 TT. The crowd was 10,263 which for a League One game on Boxing Day was OK. Very sad how far a once proud club like Stockport County have fallen.
I was at this, standing on the open cop end of the ground. I used to have a mate who was a County fan & I used to enjoy going the boozers around the ground with him.
There’s been a few but one that stands out at present was Southend away I think 2008 , I’m sure we won 2-3 And either Reed or Campbell Rice scored direct from a corner and it was a relegation battle. That was a great day out and enjoyable long ride home with a hangover but still drinking .
Peterborough away a few years back, 4-3 with a couple of absolute blinders from Vaz Te and Craig Davies. Standing behind the goal was great.
[ Been to Stockport County once. Went in a few pubs around the ground. It was a good day out and got talking to a few Stockport fans. When it came to going to the match itself. I asked where they sat and said I'd go in the home end. They asked me if I wanted to come to Old Trafford with them as they weren't paying to watch that ****.
Well let’s be honest they weren’t Stockport fans then . Had similar experience in Birkenhead only they were Everton Fans .
Not a victory, but it felt like one. 2-2 against Newcastle at home. We probably should have won it with the amount of chances we had but I remember Hassell taking the game by the scruff of the neck and getting us a point.
Remember that well ... 3 nil and cruising just after half time, and didn't they get it back to 3-3 only for us to get the winner?
Walsall at home during the 14/15 season we won 3-0 and Oakwell was absolutely rocking. We went into sixth in the league that day. It's a shame they fecked it up that season.
IIRRC that was the game where we went 3-0 up and let them get it back to 3-3 before scoring the 4th to clinch the victory I still love standing at a football match and there was a great atmosphere behind the goal (though it dipped a bit when they got the 3rd) -definitely not one I will be forgetting
a 3-1 away win at Reading followed by a 4-1 away win at Yeovil in the next match the relegation season after the great escape. I was at both games. It was a bit like this time, we were all resigned to going down but then got 2 unexpected away wins on the bounce to give us hope again. It was short lived and normal service with defeats resumed with us losing all but 2 of our remaining games after that
