Disagree about Caroll. England always need a player for that game where we're going out of a tournament, just to mix it up a bit, and cause mayhem. I'd have actually selected him more often for that sole purpose.

Some bad shouts in here for me with many of the recent players named, most of them fully deserved their caps.

A lot of the lads getting mentioned on this thread peaked young & had a long gradual decline through injuries mainly so people might only be remembering the past it versions of them e.g. Wilshere, Dyer, Walcott, Wright-Phillips.

A couple of others I strongly disagree with are Danny Mills who was a regular starter for a Leeds side challenging for Europe every season & had a brilliant 2002 World Cup when Neville was injured.

Joey Barton if anything should’ve got more caps when you consider some of the players who got them ahead of him. He was excellent for City & Newcastle. His off field behaviour probably stopped him from getting more.

Even Leon Osman was a regular starter for about a decade for a team challenging for Europe nearly every season, that’s not a bad player.

This thread for me is for players like Michael Ricketts who had a good 3 months & got a cap not players who peaked young or who were consistent premier league performers

Yes I was naming players I don't rate who play for England, Kieran Gibbs and Phil Neville would be other ones.

I can vaguely remember Danny Mills having a purple patch.

Leon Osman was normally on the bench though.

I agree in parts to your comment however I think you are being overly protective of Osman who was a bang average premier league player for a team that Yo Yo’d between a decent season in the top 6 to being almost relegation candidates.

He was a decent player for Everton but nowhere near England quality.

Osman was a bit lucky but to even be a bang average premier league player for a decade you’ve got to be bloody good considering that most of the top teams have a majority of foreign players so any average English premier league player won’t be far off a cap.

I remember a Barton interview where he was talking about how trolls would write to him ‘you’re just an average premier league player’ as if to insult him & he said that was a huge compliment given the quality in the league & how footballs the most popular sport in the country

Anybody who is picked on the strength of a good training session for Chelsea, Man Utd or Borussia Dortmund under 23's.
