from what we have been told drivers hours can only be relaxed through a change in legislation and supermarkets already take deliveries 24 hours a day

the government are panicking in that they are worried the supply chain will fall apart because of increased demands, and being that most of , if not all ,the cabinet have never lived in the real world they immediately thought that the restrictions on drivers hours would be the main obstacle

like i say if pillocks stopped raiding the supermarket shelves then there wold be no worries or any problem with supplies

I couldn't agree more. The immediate steps that are being taken to protect lives are the number one priority a close second is the economy. I've heard it said that the government may chose the economy over people when it comes to resources. The economy isn't some mystical being set apart from us, it is the people. It is their businesses, jobs, mortgages, savings, whole livelihood. The steps that the government take now to protect not just businesses but people, will be judged as GK suggests in around a year.

I've seen comments on news site that jump straight down the throat of anyone who bemoans the impact on the economy, along the lines of "is this what we have become when we prioritise the economy over people's lives". We are hoping to keep the number of deaths under 20,000. That is a tragic number of lost lives for sure, but no mistake, the damage that this does to the economy IS people's lives and we will suffer enormously for this for years and years. The damage we are inflicting on the economy really is apocalyptic.

The economic damage will cause more public health damage over the long term than the virus will by a factor of 10, is my guess.

Predictions were released last night of an average 15% drop in GDP across Western economies in the next quarter. That is beyond Great Depression territory.

That lead to an increase in nationalism in places like Germany, Italy and Japan (and other countries) and only ended with the outbreak of WW2.

Nationalism has been on the rise in a lot of parts of Europe over last few years, let’s hope History doesn’t repeat itself.

If this isolation process needs repeating multiple times throughout the year then I can see big trouble ahead as people lose their willingness to abide by the measures imposed, as they see their lives crumble around them.

    It’s bad.
But it’s not as bad as it’s often been painted.
I reckon we could lose 10 to 50 thou.
In comparison 20 million Russians died In WWII.
More than all other countries put together.

It will come - and it will go.
    Look after yer old folk.

Plus - by the time we have to walk up to Oakwell again, that bridge might be ready.

15-20 million Chinese died in WW2 fighting the Japanese.
    6.9-7.4m Germans
    6m Poles
    3-4m in Indonesia
    3m India
    2-3m Japan

Yes, the Russians lost the most, but other countries suffered incredible losses too.

I blame Barnsley Council producing Coronavirus in a lab so they had more time to build a bridge that belongs to Network Rail.
