The best musical concert/ gig by an artist or group you have attended thus far.? Which concert/gig you intended to go to but for whatever reason you didn't or couldn't.? My best concert ever was seeing Waylon Jennings and the Waylors with guest Jessi Colter ( his wife) at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983. I had tickets to see the original line up of the Eagles re- Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, but because of an illness in the family, I couldnt attend and had to sell my tickets to a mate.
I’ll prepare for some hammer here but I took my kids to see One Direction twice and they were brilliant both times. Other good ones: Beverley Craven Elton John Van Morrison Richard Hawley
blink-182 in Nottingham, February 2004. They split up a year later. By all accounts, the in-fighting and anger amongst them came to a head on that UK tour and it made for the best LIVE version of the band that I've seen, as they smashed out the songs at such a frenetic pace, with such angst, it was unreal at the time as a 21-year-old. Hope everyone is doing well. You Reds.
Rolling Stones, Sheffield City Hall March '65 Chuck Berry, Leeds Odeon March '65 - although he went offstage halfway through and didn't come back. The Kinks, Barnsley Civic Hall, Nov '94
Me and a mate were only 15 and wanted to do led zep at Knebworth. But couldn’t find an adult to help with travel. (We’d previously done other gigs on the train but Knebworth is a nightmare to get to). best gig was Weller at Don Valley stadium. On the bill David Byrne Skunk Anansie Travis Supernaturals Beth Orton And others.
Green Day at Main Square Festival in Arras, France 2014. Turns out the French aren’t big fans allowing me to walk straight to the front and watch them from literally feet away.
If I can have 2 given ones a solo artist the other a band. Cyndi Lauper 4 times but extra special at Sheffield city Hall due to audience participation. Green Day- twice but Sheffield Arena was a more enjoyable concert compared to old Trafford cricket ground. Prefer arena venues to outdoor. Wanted to see Billy Joel. But refused to pay extortionate prices. £150 +
Difficult to pick out for me really. Favourite has to be my first, Foo Fighters at Manchester Apollo, May 1997. Musically, any Death Cab for Cutie show I've seen over the years or Incubus at Mesa Amphitheater, AZ in 2007.
I’m going to cheat here and award multiple prizes Best overall Show Kylie Minogue. Showgirl Homecoming tour at Wembley Arena. Stunning show and atmosphere. Never wanted it to end Best individual Mike Peters (from the Alarm) mystery guest performer at Greenbelt festival early 90’s in the Big Top. Just him with a guitar playing the Alarm songs we all knew the place was rocking Best student Gig Lindesfarne Liverpool uni Student Union 1982/3. Never knew how much of their material I knew and liked Most surprisingly good Show Cliff Richard Headline act at one of the Greenbelts I went to can’t remember which but late 80s or early 90s. Never been a fan but live he was amazing only stayed to watch because I was already there
Kurt Wagner (solo), John Dee (Rockefeller), Oslo, 2007. I've seen Lambchop a few times and they're always good but this was a solo, acoustic performance by the great man in a tiny venue. I was there with a new colleague who didn't know his music at all and I'd just pointed out that he was the guy wandering around the crowd when he started to sing, gradually making his way to where he had a chair and his guitars set up, plus songsheets pegged to a washing line above him. It was such an intimate performance and he's just so goddamned talented I was transfixed for the whole concert, apart from when he played "Let's Go Bowling" and I took a hit on the roaming charges (remember them?) to stand by the stage with my mobile so Mrs Burgundy Red could hear it, back in Blighty. Here's a clip from later in that tour.
David Bowie at Leeds Rollerena in 1973 doing one of the last Ziggy gigs. It was so good, it ruined every concert I’ve been to since, nothing came close.
The Who at Sheffield arena circa 1999 / 2000. Absolutely brilliant. I've seen them three times and this one was their best in my opinion. They did all their big hits and a lot of Quadrophenia stuff.
Metallica at Download 2006. They played the whole Master of Puppets album for the 20th anniversary or quite recently, Frankie Valli in Leeds. Superb.
I saw him on the same tour and as you say absolutely outstanding. And it was my first concert I had attended.
