Hearing from a few people it's down to the employer to apply for this. And as a result some employers are saying they won't and staff have to come to work.
From a couple of people at two large employers in Barnsley.
Not sure if that's how it works or not does anyone know?

Yes, basically how it works (from my understanding) is that the employer furloughs the employee, pays the employee 80%, then claims that back as a grant from the government.

So these employers saying if staff don't come in they will only get ssp are within their rights then.

Yeah, they are, unfortunately. The 80% is for furloughed employees, not isolating employees

Sadly that will encourage people to work when they shouldn't

indeed. SSP needs to be looked at, as ministers themselves have said they couldn't live on £94 a week

Im not sure what the gov. can do, in the time schedules we have.
They want only essential workers to turn up for their jobs but food needs to be put on the table and the infrastructure (ie. universal credit) cannot cope within normal issues.
I think that its clear that the very reason, universal credit was brought in, is now going to be responsible for a whole lot more suffering.

That’s what’s happening where I work. Unless you are on staff then they are making it as economically difficult as they can For you to stay off work.

I'm in the same boat . Stayed off work today as that's what I thought I was supposed to do . I was wrong so I'll be back in tomorrow . Here's the official advice....

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...dance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others

    Here's the key bit.....

    1. Staying at home
You should only leave the house for one of four reasons:

    • Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible.
    • One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
    • Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
    • Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.
The bottom point , if you can't work from home you should go to work .

Same boat, quarrying cant be done from home, office staff working from home, operational staff expected to come in and do a normal shift. Steady stream of trucks in and out though so it looks as if at least some sites are still working.

People should be at work if they can do so within government guidelines. I can understand some employers being slow to work out what's 'essential' work.
