I recently started a garage conversion and I got an electrician round to give me a quote on 6 double sockets and 6 LED downlights fitting. The electric mains box is in the garage already with power already connected to a single ceiling light and a double socket at the back. this is the quote I’ve got which I think seems very excessive! “Hello mate thanks for having me round. To install all the sockets u mentioned plus the 6 downlights with LED lamps NicEic Installation Certificate on completion I’ve got it to £480 mate I hope this is of some help” does that seem reasonable to any sparkies on here?
I'd be thinking £200 for a days labour, £150 max for fittings (dependant on quality) and cable. So a bit excessive really. I suppose he has to pay to be in NIC/EIC, but not all off your job.
Will be getting a couple more quotes for sure. Was meant to have all boards & studs delivered yesterday, I don’t think they can deliver now so everything’s up in air at minute so probably gonna wait til all this blows over.
If he’s VAT registered then that doesn’t help. Around £40 ph labour charges. Mark up on materials . Probably about right. If you purchase the materials yourself and can do a bit of the Labour yourself. You could save a fair bit. Sounds like the boarding will be a while. So your not pushed for time. Obviously leave the connections and positioning to the spark to fall inside the regs. If you know anyone who can recommend then go with that. Ps as someone suggested above if he’s charging a day rate. Would be around £200/£250.
Hi Nogger I'm out of isolation in 10 days so I can come and quote you I'm sure i can beat that price. Cheers Mike
£480 is what I paid last year for my garage conversion, I had 8 spotlights, 6 sockets, new consumer unit and about 10 metres of new cable to supply the garage because the existing one wasn't big enough. So in comparison you're quote is probably slightly excessive but not a rip off. Look at the self employed thread I'm sure there's a sparky who is looking for work.
