but are we -my son is now unemployed-and is an ill person and is in the high risk group and awaiting further assessment -which has now peen postponed for 3 months!!!. He lives in a council house- and just been assessed for universal credit.
u/c pays him £520 per month -rent he has to pay £320- rates he has to pay £100- gas and electric average bill £90 leaving him £10 for food etc. oh and if he pays his t.v licence monthly he is -£10. so much for the 'living wage' or minimum pay this government has set.
now if he was employed he would get 80% up to £2500 per month for his wages depending - his employer would get 100% rate rebate. what about house owners, renters who pay rates -no chance- the worst off in society disregarded and expendable

well I hope all the knowledgeable people who voted in the so called 'red wall' for this lot, will now realise the error of their ways and the 'hand that fed them will come back to bite them' unemployment will spiral up in the north as well- best of luck with u/credit

Because the narrative over the last 10 years has been about blaming the unemployed / homeless / disabled for all the ills of the world and that those people need knocking down even more to save us all . Funny how now no one is complaining of the " free money " they happen to be recieving .

I know I may be being a little stupid here but what do you mean by £320 rates? Is that rent?
And are you saying he pays £190 for gas and electric per month? Because that is ridiculously high.

 

Rates as in council tax .

 

He said he pays £320 rent, £100 rates (council tax) and £90 in total for gas and electricity per month.

 

I thought it was £320 rates as in rent, £100 electric, £90 gas. Thought he just have been on some extortionate tariff.
He should be entitled to some council tax relief at the very least

 

I’m not an expert by any stretch, but my understanding is if unemployed you get most if not all of rent and rates paid?
Edit: not picking fault etc, just pointing out in case not aware (if what I have said is true)

 

If you happen to be living in a house which is deemed too big for your needs then you have to pay the extra .Shouldn't be paying council.tax though.

 

Under UC the amount to cover your rent* is paid to you.

*but the rent amount is based on an arbitrary rent amount and they only pay rent for the number of bedrooms you ‘need’.

so if you’re employed and on a good income and you’re happy to live alone in a 3 bed house and pay £600 rent, the government might decide you only get £200 (not researched figures - but you could look them up if you need to).

there should be a reduction in council tax, but I don’t know the detail.

I hope we all realise in the future that benefit rates do not cover the luxury lifestyle some posters here have been arguing.

 

Yeah that’s how I understood it too, but have never had to claim, so couldn’t be sure.
