i was born on cemetary road marlon so used to go down to me grandad after school,if he wasnt in littlefield lane box i used to walk up to mitchells.

my grandad worked on railways all his life and prior to mitchells he worked up on darfield station at millhouses,he saved a runaway passenger train, chased it back towards cat hill and got on the platform and stopped it, he got a medal and an inscribed watch for his troubles,he used to tell me about it when i were a babby lol

ps,i'll bet my grandad and your grandad were mates, especially working at neighbouring boxes

Deffo will have been mates he knew everybody in Wombwell especially on railways .
He were mi step gdad as my real grandads were killed in war but he was the only one I knew as gdad.
He worked at Manvers for years he used to cycle through Wath , been to his signal box loads of times with him on bike .
Manvers were very busy then with coal trains and passenger trains and those leavers were heavy.

Stopping sometimes halfway to coast;cafe or toilets. If you were at the back of the coach there was a bucket for puke. Walking around the town/beach nodding to friends and neighbours on the same trip. But most of all; the long line of coaches early in the morning and brown envelope of cash, space pop and crisps.

Was it not called Wombwell Central Station? Seem to recall it closed to passengers circa 1959/60. Used to regularly see such iconic steam trains like the Flying Scotsman and Mallard to name but a few - Ahhh, the memories are flooding back

It must have been after that surely . I’m convinced I went on trips with Reform from that station and I’d be too young to remember that far back .
We travelled from Stairfoot on a Sunday Morning and I’m sure we walked and I don’t think we walked up to the existing one .
if that’s when it closed it can’t have been that and after all these years I thought it was and no ones said different untill now . dissapointed I was very young but not that young .

Is that the Reform Club in Wombwell Marlon.? Wife's Grandad Jim Hartshorne was the Steward there
before moving to Dunscroft to manage the Broadway Hotel.

Early sixties would be in my memories possibly 62 -64.theyre very early memories in fact I can see them in my mind in black and white lol.
I’m convinced it wasn’t the top railway station and I’m just wondering if by any chance they could have picked us up on the stairfoot line where the Ash is now I do have recollections if someone at my old colliery mentioning summat like that years ago but it’s all fuzzed fir now .

We've had a coach company for the last 43 years, although club trips were lucrative they we're the most stressful weekends ever, drivers sleeping in or not turning up for work , coaches breaking down etc . Do I miss it, you bet I do.
I don't miss cleaning the puke up tho.
