Big jump again today to 562 deaths

Not quite - if I accept that there’s still an 80% lag, which is conjecture; actual stats yesterday let’s say 1,000 to make calculation easier. Inflate by 80% = 1,800.

Article estimates 7% total deaths happening at home: 7% of 1,800 = 126 per day. It’s true they may be clustered together though - I see a number of reports today that areas with a high concentration of ethnic minorities are more affected for example.

 

That's some statement but they are probably right. China probably do already have a vaccine.

 

not conjecture at all. ONS stats clearly show 80% underreporting which is what you would expect given how ONS collates stats with a time lag. If you accept the &00 missing from the stats where do you think the rest are dying given the Govt states it is including deaths in care homes on the daily stats?

 

I am sure we and other Western powers have spies in China who would have reported on it by now, unless our Governments are sat on such info waiting for the right moment to respond.

The usual weekend lag. Tomorrow will be the same. Tuesday which is always an horrible day may be different due to the bank holiday. I'm expecting Wednesday-Friday to be our peak.

This has been handled terribly from the start I'm afraid. It looks like we are going to be the worst affected country in Europe. As an island there is so much we could have done in the early days with testing & quarantining. As I said a few weeks ago my infected neighbour was allowed to travel back on the Eurostar, then on a train up to Leeds from Kings X. **** knows how many he infected en route.

This Boris pantomime is just a smokescreen. Coming out of intensive care & being released so quickly afterwards, showing no obvious symptoms, other than a worse barnet than normal.

 

Shame Hancock couldn't do a full half hour.

 

Similar to other European countries and could have done much more to stop the spread.

I hope someone questions this at the daily briefing tomorrow. Staff aren't being protected and the elderly aren't strong enough to survive. It's an horrific story and incredibly sad. Care homes are not safe at the moment for those living in them.

 

Out of interest what do you expect them to do to reduce it in care homes?

 

To do all we can to prevent the virus from entering care homes in the first place, so testing all staff who work there and decontamination of anything that goes in.
Not suggesting that is easy, but surely this is where our efforts should be focused: protecting vulnerable people properly. We're clearly not doing so.

 

Reports last week that our governments (through the CIA/NSA) knew of the emergence of a new virus in China in November last year and were inadequately prepared (see also USA).

 

As per tweet further down from the one linked, we're not counting community and care home deaths, nor ones at post mortem. Our figures are certainly higher.

 

As you say, I didn't think this was comparing like-for-like. France wasn't declaring care home ("EHPAD") deaths until April 3, then they caught up and started including them daily. The deaths in hospitals here are now generally down to the 300s per day but the overall numbers are still much higher. As of yesterday's figures quoted in Le Monde, of the 14393 total deaths reported in France, 5140 were in EHPADs and 9,253 in hospitals.

I don't know how bad the care home situation is in the UK relative to here. Some of the homes in Paris and Grand-Est have been particularly badly hit. It seems reasonable to assume though that the UK's equivalent numbers are significantly higher than those quoted and one should therefore be wary of making direct comparisons.

 

Healthy young adults on lockdown confined to their homes and yet no special measures to protect the extremely vulnerable in care homes. It is beyond mental.

 

Old people still out shopping when we could use a furloughed work force of millions to ensure every single vulnerable person in the country has supplies brought to their door and the latest technology so they don't feel isolated, able to contact family or loved ones, or in cases where they don't have anyone, volunteers who will talk to them.
Our NHS is being overrun as we're not adequately protecting vulnerable people.

 

My second daughter works at a care home, she was telling us they are not allowed to wear masks etc as the management feel it will scare the patients(mostly dementia patients). Families are not allowed to attend unless the patient is on their death bed, then they are with no precautions in place. Add to this the the NHS are sending elderly patients from the Hospital there.

The article posted in Sun is third such mass deaths I have heard of now, Glasgow & Luton. It sounds like they are all an accident waiting to happen.

 

I wonder if those cases are appearing in the government's figures.
