I have to drive through there from time to time. It's not a place I'd recommend. The two things that strike me every time, is 1. The amount of litter in the streets - it's filthy. 2. The complete dominance of men in the streets. Very rare to drive through and not see gangs of men of all ages on the street corners, chatting, hanging around in big groups. It's quite intimidating. I think there are ongoing troubles between two gangs from different cultures. I wouldn't be rushing to live there.
And Sheffielders have the cheek to call us five fingered inbreds! Areas of Sheffield are far worse than anywhere in Barnsley.
I’ve not seen Page Hall close up but I’ve seen Pittsmoor and Burngreave. Burngreave is the only place in the UK I’ve ever felt intimidated.. I am 6”3” and 18-19st.
It’s trouble between gangs of the same culture down there, different families of Slovakian gypsies. They’ll kick off over anything at any time. Very few of them work. Which is why they congregate constantly. It’s always been a poor area with a varied ethnic mix however, the vast majority have sold up and got out once the Roma turned up. Those who are still there who can’t sell up are living in hell. Their houses are worthless.
I don't hold out hope of the police doing anything. When there is usually uproar about something the SYP Twitter account usually tweet about it such as when the Wednesday kid got beaten up by one of their own. But for this they are silent.
I did my teacher training in Burngreave. I once got off the bus in my suit and briefcase and walked through an armed police siege of a drug gang on the street into school
I wonder what it was that attracted them to the UK from eastern europe ? Open borders, free healthcare, free money ? Of course not all immigration is bad but when voting for Brexit this is just the type of thing I was voting to put a stop to. Once the British Government can decide who comes here rather that those who sit in Brussels we’ll hopefully see the end of these sorts infesting our country. Get Brexit Done.
It's also the Covid19 death hotspot in Sheffield. I see what you are saying but if we think we can just sit there and say we want all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks, we will get told to swivel.
The British government have always had the power to decide who comes and who stays but chose not to use it, but I suppose that is too hard to understand
And I refer the honorable gentleman to Article 7 - The Right of Residence over 3 months. From https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eudr/2004/38/article/7 "Right of residence for more than three months 1.All Union citizens shall have the right of residence on the territory of another Member State for a period of longer than three months if they: (a) are workers or self-employed persons in the host Member State; or (b) have sufficient resources for themselves and their family members not to become a burden on the social assistance system of the host Member State during their period of residence and have comprehensive sickness insurance cover in the host Member State; or (c) are enrolled at a private or public establishment, accredited or financed by the host Member State on the basis of its legislation or administrative practice, for the principal purpose of following a course of study, including vocational training; and have comprehensive sickness insurance cover in the host Member State and assure the relevant national authority, by means of a declaration or by such equivalent means as they may choose, that they have sufficient resources for themselves and their family members not to become a burden on the social assistance system of the host Member State during their period of residence; or (d) are family members accompanying or joining a Union citizen who satisfies the conditions referred to in points (a), (b) or (c)." So, in EU law - which as you state trumps UK law - they only have the right to stay more than 3 months if they are working, have sufficient resources to support themselves, or are enrolled on a course of study with comprehensive sickness insurance (or the family members of those). So our government is choosing to give them benefits if they are not working, studying or unable to support themselves. It is entirely down to the British, Conservative government of the last 10 years if they are in receipt of benefits for not applying the relevant EU law. Clause 3 a, b, c and d refer to short periods of sickness and to their having to have worked for a period of one year and been made involuntary redundant before they can register as a job seeker.
The missus did a visit to Burngreave to see one of the Roma kids. Nice lad who wrote that he wanted to be a car washer like his dad when he grows up. They aren't all scum. Treat like it in Slovakia though. Another problem is the older kids who have come over have probably no formal education, making them a nightmare to teach. And one of the most common trait of difficult kids is that they are generally good attenders.
I thank my learned friend for his contribution, however, my reply to the complainant doubtless a remainer was in relation to EU freedom of movement law preventing our government from determining who has the right to settle here. A fact lost on many of his persuasion and the very reason we ended up with a referendum in the first place
