What evidence is there that the reason for the different approaches was the men's skin colour rather than being the result of a sadistic cop who had already killed a man, attempted to kill another and had 18 complaints against him?

I could if you want provide examples where white men have been killed by police and for a similar crime a black guy is still alive. Would that make the police racist against white men? Or would it just be random because they are different people involved at different times?

What about Daniel Shaver who was quite literally executed by a sick police officer whilst begging for his life and all caught on camera? The result of the trial? Not guilty.

Donnell Lang? Killed by police who claimed he was armed. It's about a year later now and they've still not found the gun nor have any witnesses backed up the police claims.

Both white. Proof the police are racist?

Or proof that some cops are absolutely mental with a thirst for blood?

Why does it have to be automatically racially motivated based on no evidence except the victims skin colour? Why can't it simply be a case that there are bad people in the world?

Because people are reacting to the media and acting like sheep instead of doing actual research and looking into the deeper details.

Was Derek Chauvin racist for killing a black man? How does that fit in with his previous killing of a white man? Nobody has yet even attempted to answer that. All that I've had in response is abuse or the age old line of 'but a higher percentage of black men are killed than white'.
A much much higher percentage of males are killed than females. Is that proof of sexism or is that just silly? Why is the statistic allowed to be used as evidence of racism without any other facts but the same statistic is branded stupid when the disparity in gender is mentioned? Again nobody has even attempted to answer that. Mainly because they can't.

I think that you can't just tar all police with the same brush, claim they're all racist and make a statement that a murder was racially motivated JUST because of the victims skin colour. I think that making such a wild claim is in itself prejudiced as the judgement has been made before gaining any facts other than skin colour.

I think that whipping up hysteria and screaming that the police are racist. The police are actively killing black men because of their skin colour. I think that is ******* dangerous. If I was a black guy in America and I had it drilled into me by everyone that police will try to kill me because I'm black then I'll tell you know I'm drawing my gun and I'm shooting the police before they can shoot me.
Guess what? That's exactly what does happen in America. It's a dangerous message to send out and it's complete ********.

Why can't we dig deeper and look at the REASONS instead of just looking at the skin colour and making a snap judgement?

Black men are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white men. Black women 1.4 times more likely. American Indian men are also more likely than white, non-Hispanic men to be killed by police, at a rate 1.2 to 1.7 times greater, while the rate for Latino men is 1.3 to 1.4 times greater than the rate for white men.

So are the police sexist or not? 1 in 3.5m if your a woman, 1 in I think 176 thousand if you're a man.

Sexist or not? The statistic says yes right?

If you want to believe skin colour doesn't get you different police treatment after 400 years of black oppression then that's your choice. You're on your own but I suspect you like it that way.

I can see your point about evil nasty people per se... BUT if you look at the statistics which prove the tendency for the police as an institution to be racist then the murder of the gentleman is yet further proof of that exact racism. That is why people are appalled and angry. The video recording of it/details of it do suggest evil as you say but, again it is the tendency for the institution committing these acts which is under question and indeed the heartless over-zealousness with which the policeman choked the guy lends further credence to racist claims because people can actually see this event on video. If the video/verbal evidence backs up some preconceived ideas about racism then that is perfectly understandable in the context of US culture. So, in essence, because it is another black guy who has been murdered it draws attention to the said racism. On top of that, the reaction of the state/Trump where often peaceful demonstrators have been called extremists and thugs has further fuelled claims that there is racism embedded in US culture. Do you see that?

    Rejoice! Progress!

"Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden suggested that police be trained to shoot individuals posing a threat to them “in the leg instead of the heart,” as the country grapples with its national outrage over the murder of George Floyd.

Biden brought up the idea while speaking to African American community leaders Monday at Bethel AME Church in Wilmington, Delaware.

The former vice president mostly sat and listened during the event, only speaking at the end to address the comments and concerns they raised.

“Instead of standing there and teaching a cop when there’s an unarmed person coming at them with a knife or something, shoot them in the leg instead of in the heart,” Biden said.

You want me to address that whilst you're launching strawmen saying people are claiming all cops are racist.

    It's a no btw.

Yes and no. On the Donald trump issue of course he's racist. But isn't he also an absolute loon who abuses his power regularly? His reaction to the riots doesn't really scream to me that he is racist it screams to me that he's a complete ****. The military on his orders are indiscriminately attacking anyone regardless of colour.

On the specific killing. I still think it's wrong to instantly without facts scream OMG RACISTTTT. That's just wrong imo. I can understand the black people of America thinking it because they're **** scared but I think it's utterly irresponsible for everyone else to whip up a witch hunt and go along with it.
Don't you think it's crazy that instead of talking about this killer cop. Instead of having everyone remember his name and concentrate the media on him. All you hear is RACIST!!! RACISTTTTTTT.!!! THE POLICE ARE ALL RACISTTTTT!!!!

It whips up a frenzy. It scares the living crap out of every black man in America and it creates a big circle of death.

Here's a good question. How safe would you, as a perfectly none racist white man, feel being a policeman in the south of America right now? I know if I was one there's no way in hell I like pull over a single black guy because 1. I'd be terrified he's going to pull a gun on me in fear for his own life and 2. I'd be terrified that if I had to use any force on him I'd be labelled a racist.

Why aren't we addressing the issues at the beginning of the chain instead of looking at the end of it?

I'll stick my neck on the line here as a " civvy " and say that's a false narrative . Military personnel within western militaries are allowed a degree of independent thought , or to disobey orders if local command deems it fit from a tactical viewpoint .

You know that saying " would argue black is white" springs to mind . I've tried my best but I'm giving up now.

With respect I don't think you're following the logic of my argument so I think we'll have to disagree about the issue.
As to the 'being a policeman' scenario I wouldn't like it.
    Cheers

    Are they?
I mean I'll accept that they're attacking both black and white people - but today I've seen...

Black people trying to defend property from white looters who flagged down police to help, the police took the only sensible option of arresting the black store owners.

A white guy in full riot gear armed with an assault rifle who pointed it at the faces of black protesters at close range - in a state where there's no open carry laws - the police did the right thing though; they sent him home.

Of course these and hundreds of similar stories could have nothing to do with race - it might just be dumb luck o_O

Or it might be that as the entire culture is racist at heart - then there must be a fair proportion of the people who support that culture are also racist - it'd be odd if they werent.

@SuperTyke When the vast majority of the world is condoning it and nobody else is fighting your corner, it is sometimes worth taking a step back and considering that you might be wrong on this.

I am with Helen on this, i think sometimes people are that side out they will argue for the sake of it.

US troops from the 82nd airborne division have been moved from their base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to the outskirts of Washington DC, according to multiple reports from unnamed defense department officials.

Around 700 members of the 82nd are now poised at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and Fort Belvoir in Virginia, the Associated Press reports. Joint Base Andrews is where Air Force One takes off when the president goes on trips and is minutes from the White House, just outside the boundary of the capital.

In addition, 1,400 more soldiers are ready to be mobilized within an hour, AP writes, according to two defense department officials, who are not named.

The soldiers are armed and have riot gear, and they also have bayonets, the agency reports.

It is not clear if this is (almost literal) saber-rattling from the president, who has been talking hardline on law and order, displaying hardware in order to intimidate protesters, or if those troops will really be seen on the streets of Washington.

The president has the jurisdiction to send US troops into the federal capital pretty freely, without invoking legislation or seeking permission as would be the case with a state.
