Didn't a referee, Bobby Madley get fired for a similar incident in the past? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53007456
Madley made comments about someone with disabilities. Alli's comments are clearly racist however and should be dealt with appropriately. 1 match ban is a joke of a punishment. What would happen if it a black player? More so at this moment in time.
It seems to have been downplayed, that's what I meant. At present and rightly so society is having a frank discussion about race (BLM) and inequality. I'm therefore extremely disappointed that a black player who's in the public eye has done this. Edit: wasn't Son his own team mate racially abused this season? Just want everybody to be held to the same standards. Suarez got a lengthy ban for using racist language on the pitch. Though this is off the pitch and in private he's still been racist IMO
True but if I did that and my employer found out I wouldn't be getting a 1 match ban I'd be getting a P45.
I certainly would working in the nhs that's for sure (after a few months suspension prior to a hearing).
Yeah i think a lot of people felt that regarding the Madley issue and he was fired. Im not advocating Alli is fired. But for very similar incidents for people in the same industry the gap in punishment is wide. The inconsistencies in everything football authorities manage is continuously wide.
One match is absolutely ridiculous for a 'racially aggravated breach' of the rules. Tug a players shirt when you're on a yellow and it's the same punishment as racially mocking people? However I don't for one minute think he got off lightly because of his skin colour as has been implied above. Other players found guilty of similar offences in the past have been punished in a similarly lenient way
The general theme is .. - Fans get lifetime bans and potential legal action - Officials get fired - Players get one game ban I think its hard to make a strong point and set standards, when the authorities apply multiple standards and levels of leniency. Should the same be applied or are there mitigations. Same with fines for clubs where racism seems to be lighter than typing on another club or fielding a non registered player. I dont know whether Alli's actions were racism but they weren't appropriate just like Madley.
I didnt state he got off lightly due to skin colour, I made reference to the fact that had 'at this current time' a similar offence been carried out against a black member of society it would have lead to a greater sanction. I'm a leading voice in equality and totally support the BLM movement. I just think footballers and people not in the public eye aren't treated the same; sanctions aren't applied fairly. I'm sure if a young black lad did that working for Tesco he'd get the sack or face serious repercussions, final warning etc. I think at this time folk just need to be mindful of each other. The problem in society is for too long we've (the majority) been Thatcher's children, look after number 1, greed is good. Since 2008 and the crash it's been a constant blame game. The media and politicians playing the public for mugs. Location, location, location telling folk to buy cheap 2nd houses (probably repo's) etc and benefits street telling us anyone on benefits are scum. Then came **** knows how many elections and the referendum. Then ******* Brexit. The response to Covid in some places is the 1st time in years communities have worked together. Folk have had chance to stop and pondered for 12 weeks and as times gone on they woken up to our broken system. Then tonight we find out our government have been trying to hide the findings and recommendations from the BAME report into Covid. Governments actions laid bare once again. What a country we live in!!! Rant over time for bed!
