I'm going to put 5 away matches I attended, who else attended? 1. Shrewsbury Tues neet 0-2 Banks & Walker 2. Boro FA Cup 2-1 Lester 3. Plymouth FA Cup 2-2 ? Taggart 4. Newcastle 1-2 Glavin Cuningham 5.Chesterfield 0-0 New years Day Fixture.
For me, 1,2,3 & 5. I was away in Portugal on holiday for number 4. By the way, Andy Payton was the other scorer in the cup game at Plymouth with a superb lob.
That night in a bar in Ericeira, my friend & I got everyone singing:- "Some folk think that football's boring, Ronnie Glavin's always scoring, Can you hear the Ponty roaring, Glavin is our king!" The next day, we were drinking coffee at a cafe in the village square, suffering from an almighty hangover. Two policemen walked up to us and started singing the song to us! Apparently, they'd been in the same bar (off duty, of course!) and had really enjoyed our Barnsley sing-a-long!
2 and 3 for me. It would have been 5 as well, if some toe-rag hadn't organised a bus, taken our payments in advance and done a runner with the money. We were stood at the Telstar in Wath waiting for a bus that never came. Kexborough Reds came to pick some of us up, but there wasn't room for everyone.
2,3,4,and 5, Guessing I couldn’t get somebody to swap shifts with 1. Special mention for 5. I seem to remember they only opened 2/3 turnstiles. I did manage to get in for kick off. Not sure if they held it back. ?
By the way, I thought Barnsley's goals against Newcastle were scored by Ronnie Glavin & Derrick Parker. It was Tony Cunningham's debut that day, but I thought he scored his first Barnsley goal in the 4-3 victory over Fulham the following week. Glavin and Ian Banks 2 got our other goals, with Cunningham scoring the winner.
2, 4 and 5. 2 ... crammed in like sardines in the corner of Ayresome Park. 4 ... went on a coach from Oakwell. Just inside the ground a Newcastle fan with multi coloured hair and quite ugly stared at me through the fence and said "what you looking at, baldy lovely person". Amazing what you remember. 5 ... One of Chesterfields biggest crowds in their little old wooden ground.
You and your amazing football memory! I had it in my mind too to be honest, that Cunningham didn’t score at Newcastle. I was pretty sure it was his debut though. What a game that Fulham one was a week later. 3 nil down after 10 mins and we came back to win 4-3. Happy days....
