He's not happy and quite right as the decision doesn't make sense. He's one of the best in the business and will hopefully be commentating on live Premier League and Champions League games soon on another channel.
He will always be known by me more as the ex husband of Natalie Sawyer (lucky man, no so lucky in losing her).
I've never liked him - Clive Tyldesley - as a commentator and the combination of him and Andy Townsend has made me turn the volume down on more than one occasion. However, I find his replacement - Sam Matterface - even worse.
I wish there was an option to keep the sound but lose the commentary. I hate the commentators curse. They've even started doing it in the Horse Racing. Instead of saying Pinatubo is coming with a run down the outside. They'll say Pinatubo is coming with a winning run on the outside or the horse is poised. (This invariably turns out to be the kiss of death.) I can see that for myself ffs. Just tell people where the horse is in relation to the rest of the field, running order and whose fighting out the finish. Then let Luke Harvey and Matt Chapman dissect the race afterwards.
Dancing On Ice worked Chapman out in short order. I can't understand why the racing programmes haven't. He is like a Poundshop John McCririck. Oh for the days of Peter O'Sulivan (but never Julian Wilson).
I tell you what, ITV are wrong on this, don't get me wrong, their football coverage is crap, and generally the person who co-commentates on ITV is crap (Glen Hoddle or that annoying sod before him) but this guy has always been decent. Hopefully he'll get a move to the BBC
