We did that less often yesterday than probably any game this season is all I was saying. So in response to your original point, they obviously do work on these things in training.
How do you know the players don't all really like Ritz? We're just outsiders to what really goes on. Ritz doesn't contribute anywhere near as much as we'd all like him to, but it's obvious that Struber is meticulous about the system he wants to play and demands a specific structure that the team play with. Ritz follows those instructions and Struber trusts him to do that, so whilst we'd all love to see Oduor or other players take his place and prove to us their better, I don't think we'd be looking as strong defensively. Ritz also hasn't contributed zilch, He spread the ball brilliantly yesterday three or four times, arguably came the closest to scoring before the goal, and on another day at Luton and Leeds has a couple of assists in the bag. He's underwhelming, but he has a role. Not sure we can really be using examples of Halme and Wolfe though since the restart - Halme especially looked way off the pace in the only game he started.
Depending on what rumours you decide to believe, our previous Head Coach did get some of the targets he wanted. Maybe the same has happened with Struber but his main targets were different? Who knows, but I'd guess it's a combination of the board admitting we needed some help and Struber insisting on who he wanted to come to the club. I think any Head Coach who gives us a comfortable year in the Championship will be in demand. That's just a given. It isn't just players that use us as a springboard to greater things.
I haven’t said the players don’t like him. However, players don’t like being left out of a team when ineffective players are included. He has been largely ineffective. When it’s as obvious as it has been (just look at the number of threads), then there is a danger of unrest developing. Underwhelming? Yes he is, and that’s exactly why in my opinion he shouldn’t be a regular on the team list. I don’t think a handful of accurate passes over several games is good enough, and the times he gives away possession is too high. He’s been here long enough, played enough games, and I honestly can’t tell what his strengths are, or what his best position is.
You're assuming the players think the same as you though. That's all I'm challenging. I'd hope any player doesn't like being left out of the team, and if they think that's unfair based on Ritz being picked then you would assume a conversation with the Head Coach happens and the reasons are explained. It's all about opinions, but who shouts loudest on the internet is never really a good judge of anything. I thought he played ok yesterday and against Leeds/Luton. I also screamed at the TV numerous times about him being useless. You've also ignored everything I said about structure and shape - I don't think it's far fetched to think Struber plays him because of his experience and know how in that regard.
I’m basing my opinions on 25 years of coaching football... admittedly at junior level, but it’s experience nevertheless, topped up with what i actually see on matchdays. Yes they are opinions though. With regard to structure and shape - In my opinion Struber appears to be trying to accommodate certain players into a structure, no matter what position - Brown and Ritz to name two. - in my opinion this is a bad thing, not a good thing. I haven’t seen anything in Ritzmaier’s game yet to suggest he deserves the team being shifted about to accommodate him. He isn’t a leader, i don’t see any great influence on other players (on the pitch). Can only go on what i see.
Since the restart Brown hasn't performed as we'd have all liked in that striker role. Prior to that though he has. He had a massive influence on Chaplin's run of goalscoring form, and Woodrow was chipping in as well despite the majority of fans not wanting him in that number ten role. He wasn't getting goals but he was creating them. So I don't agree, despite your 25 years of coaching, that he's shoe-horning Brown in to a structure. It's a position he's performed much better in that recently. I get the Ritz comment though. I wouldn't pick him personally. Just offering a different view as to why he does get picked so it isn't all negative - and his influence on the team shape is clear, but the argument then is about whether that's enough to deserve a place in the Starting XI.
Lol. Captain Brexit wants someone 'with knowledge of the English leagues', and who plays good old fashioned 4-4-2. Can't write it sometimes. (PS, not looking for a political scrap or to divert the thread/whatever, just genuinely appreciating a touch of irony here. Yours, A Guardianista)
Captain Brexit. Love it, I may even change my user name !! Didn't realize 4-4-2 was exclusive to the English game though, but they do say that you should try and learn a new fact every day so thanks for that.
I have a feeling managers at all clubs get promised the earth to entice them to a club and then reality kicks in. Klopp has been told no to some players apparently and he couldn't have done much better this season in terms of delivering a much wanted title.
Before Struber 18 games 9 points = 0.5ppg After Stuber 27 games 37points = 1.3ppg Can you explain to me how that is not progressing because for me thats pretty good progress Im not saying he is perfect and I dont like the way he does some things but to say we havent progressed is just not supportable by any sensible measure
The first manager to keep four consecutive clean sheets in the second tier since Danny Wilson in 1994. Including keeping a Wigan side that put 8 past Hull 3 days later to next to no shots on target. A ppg over the season that would have us mid table (the argument of we started bottom and we’re bottom now is ridiculous) Debuts for numerous academy products even despite the really difficult circumstances. All of whom looked promising. I very much enjoyed Wolfe’s cameo at the weekend. Anderson actually looking like a defender rather than a competition winner. He’s brought Styles through carefully to look like one of if not our best player. Walton being put back in goal and looking far steadier than the two previous options (hope this doesn’t bite me on the bum Weds night) Finally and most importantly giving us a slim but fighting chance to stay up on the last day. Yes I’d love us to score more goals, we are statistically one of the biggest chance creators but lowest converters in the division. I’m not sure you can level that at the manager. What more do people want?
I'd be interested to see more segmented analysis of our chances created. I've only seen us a few limited times this year, but when I have, chance quality has been poor. It's all well and good citing number of chances and criticising the finishing, but if many of our chances are speculative 40 yarders, or bad crosses or poor passes that make a simple chance difficult, we cant blame our front players entirely.
I suppose it depends how you define progress, if we go down ppg since he took over won’t mean anything, not sure why it’s ridiculous to say we were bottom when he came and are in the bottom 2 now is a lack of progress. Surely to progress means moving toward your destination or goal, if our goal this season was anything above the bottom 3 then we haven't made progress.
The reason I think the we were bottom then and bottom now argument is ridiculous is; Every team has the ability to pick up the same number of points. So if for the first half of the season the top teams all pick up masses of points and the bottom half don’t then in the second half of the season it’s the other way round so the bottom pick up more than the middle/top, regardless of the points you pick up you inherently won’t change your league position if enough points were accrued above you before you moved towards your points target. You could define it, rather pedantically (in my mind/words) as lack of league position progress or upward mobility but to say we haven’t progressed under Struber I just can’t agree with.
I think, although more than happy to be corrected that a chance is defined as a clear goal scoring opportunity rather than a shot which could be from any speculative distance. I remember a 0-1 home loss against Hull a couple of seasons ago where we lost with them having no shots on target. The ball bounced off Frazier Campbell’s leg from a corner and went in. The git.
Personally, I think it would have been him saying during negotiations, if you want me this is what I want
We have to keep hold of Struber and in the same respect, give him the tools he needs to compete in the division. He should have now a good view of who fits his style and the gaps, ie not having to put Halme as a striker etc. Looking at games under his tenure, got us what would be mid table, with current resources that is excellent. Love to see what given the players we could achieve under him. Add to that, I'm sick of changing managers every season. We need some stability.
