Latest statement from Wigan: https://wiganathletic.com/news/2020/july/Statement-Update-From-The-Joint-Administrators/ Appeal going to take all day on Friday
Exactly, for a period of time. Bournmouth and Boscomb FC were in the lower reaches of the league for many years, it's only the present manager that has worked miracles to get them up into the prem and keep them there. They were always minnows compared to us for many many years as far back as I can remember, going back to the 50's and Wigan? I remember going there in the early 80's ( Clark/Hunter period) when they had only just arrived from the non league, we parked in the town and asked someone the way to the football ground and we ended up at the rugby ground, only got were they got because of Dave Wehlans money ( respect to the man for putting his money in for his local club ) but without that kind of investment they will sadly go back to where they came from. Sad but true for both clubs. With minimal investment and good financial management we can stay at our level ( div 1/ champs), Bournmouth might be able to do the same if the fans keep going but I'm afraid Wigan have no chance, their fan base is shrinking fast.
Long term for me it's still down to attendances and raw pulling power. By that measure Bournemouth and Wigan are both smaller clubs. Both benefited from the benefaction of an individual, which by its very nature, is transitory. Over the years they will both fall back to their natural level, just as Wimbledon and for that matter Luton did. But the fans of both will retain an unattractive air of entitlement for some time.
It's inevitable. Whether they're in the Championship or League One next season they'll be relegation favourites due to the transfer-restrictions they face, and the absolute butchering of their squad. I hate Bolton, but they are absolutely miles bigger than Wigan. They were forced to play their youth team, and then 'when matters improved' they could do no better than appointing Hill as manager and signing a load of old dross. That, at the moment, would be a good outcome for Wigan with their million pounds a month of wage-bill, and player-sales being the only way they can pay it. As soon as Paul Cook leaves them - and he will - the downward spiral will really start.
1st thing the independent tribunal looking into Wigans 12 point deduction is ask the Q.C. who is representing Wigan is " who is paying you " when they can not afford to pay Augusts salaries.
Disagree that they are bigger clubs they have been bankrolled by rich individuals basically they were just a plaything for 2 individuals. Let’s see what happens now to Bournemouth.
As soon as Paul Cook leaves them - and he will - the downward spiral will really start.[/QUOTE] I hope he doesn't end up at the sty.
Rumours on twitter of relegation release clauses of £1.5 million in both Joe Williams & Antonee Robinson's contracts. Bit of a sickener when Robinson was all but sold, to Milan, for around £10 million.
Trouble is, how much more are they going to get for them even if they win their appeal? The vultures won’t be generous, and if Robinson has failed a medical previously, that won’t help his value.
Apparently if they don't get paid within the next fortnight they can walk for nothing as their contracts end up null and void.
It's the supporters I feel for... I know its predominantly a rugby town and some of them have been less than complimentary about us but the average supporter is the one that is mostly affected by all this. The players will go to other clubs and the board will no doubt walk away mostly unscathed and continue as they were, The void that it would leave for a lot of people not having the club should they go under would be hugely detrimental to them and the economy of the town would no doubt take a hit. Unscrupilous people who come into these clubs and do things similar to what has been done at Wigan really can't be allowed to continue and things need tightening up to stop them being able to do so for the sake of the future of the game. The wage cap that has been mentioned doesn't really stop much of this as the jump up to the championship wage cap of 18 million from 2.5 in league one is ridiculous. We can't continue punishing clubs with point deductions that only hurts us fans it's about time the owners were fined more or not allowed to invest in clubs with more stringent rules in place. It's ok blaming owners but if the EFL continue to allow loop holes to be exploited and perceived bigger clubs to bend the rules then they are only allowing us to end up in the position Wigan have found themselves in.
