Whilst that isn't great, it's a 46 game season. So if you're pointing those out, you need to point out the 6 points against Fulham, 3 against Brentford, Forest, Blackburn, QPR etc. We are better suited to playing football teams, as opposed to more physical and direct sides. That being said, we've stayed up so it's irrelevant. Draw a line under it and work out how to improve on that next season.
I'm still baffled as to why there's even an appeal to be quite honest. They've been given a points deduction for entering admin. There's no getting around it.
Let’s hope you’re right. Very worried personally as I just can’t see why the administrators would want to stump up £500k if they didn’t have a strong case. You hear of these miracle QCs finding loop holes.....
I agree and that’s the point I was trying to make. I interpreted the original post as a suggestion that, should Wigan win their appeal, our poor performance against the weaker teams is what would’ve caused our relegation. I was merely pointing out that it doesn’t always work like that and we’ve stayed up at the expense of a team being given a points deduction before.
Last time in 2012 we took our foot off the pedal because we knew of Portsmouth's deduction. We even beat them in a crunch match at Oakwell. Had Portsmouth not had the deduction it's unfair to say we'd have gone down as we played differently as a result. It's the same this season. News broke of Wigan's administration just before a crunch week for us against Stoke, Luton and Wigan. That will have had a subconscious impact on the players.
Let’s be honest. We didn’t take our foot off the pedal because of Portsmouth. We had the pedal taken away from us when all the players departed in January. Our form was shocking after that and we were lucky Portsmouth broke the rules. I’d like to think we would’ve done enough had they not been penalised, but that’s not guaranteed.
Surely, it's to do with acting within the rules of the EFL, not how well you performed, or have I misunderstood the reason for today's hearing?
We are where we are the legal issue is the key now I think Wigan have to sort out their own internal affairs before challenging the points deduction. On the field before lockdown I thought it was game over don't know how good the squad is now the team has clearly improved and they have played to their limit displaying bottle and resilience to the end.
Have to admit, today's ruling regarding Sheffield Wednesday makes me apprehensive about the outcome of the Wigan appeal. At the risk of going over old ground, their owner surely must have known the likely punishment for entering administration before he actually proceeded with it.? Plus personally I can't see how in their present parlous position they could expect to make a fist of it in the Championship next season if their challenge is upheld. At this present time, they don't have a new owner in place, their Manager has resigned and the reciever is busy selling their best first team players and some of their more promising Academy prospects. They would have been far better off using the £500 k they are paying out for legal representation on the team in the hope it could hit the ground running in League One whenever that starts.
