Equally, there are the operational pressures this presents the EFL, in areas such as fixture scheduling in the event any decision(s) change a divisional line-up. In the specific case of Wednesday evening’s final round of Championship matches for season 2019/20, and any potential impact on divisional standings, relegation will be confirmed for the Clubs in 22nd, 23rd and 24th positions in the Championship table following the conclusion of those matches and will be subject to the resolution of any ongoing proceedings. In the case of Wigan Athletic the 12-point sporting sanction, as a result of the Club entering administration, will apply immediately following the end of the game against Fulham but is subject to appeal. Erm wasn’t the case against Sheffield Wednesday an ongoing proceeding that had impact on divisional standings?
It didn’t affect the standings because they are saying the season has ended therefore they are applying the punishment next season. But that statement cites “Any ongoing proceedings” and yes those proceedings against Wednesday surely would have had effected the 22nd,23rd and 24th placings.
Clearly the EFL used that evening as a cut-off point....... when Wednesday's sanction hadn't yet been issued. Wigan's appeal had been lodged, and was 'ongoing'. It's crap, I know. But that's what it is.
Actually I’ve just re-read the Sheffield Wednesday statement and they decided not to deduct points and relegate them. It was a active decision and not because the season has ended.
You would say did it/will it etc. affect something and then someone can answer ‘yes, this is the effect’. I remember it as the Effect is the Evidence, you can see the effect of something. You can only guess at how something will be affected.
In the case of Wigan it should never have spilled over after season finished . They knew when and if points were gonna be deducted this season or carried forward they should have had a week from going into admin to decide whether to appeal or not . This is a farce rom EFL and needs addressing ASAP .
That logic makes no sense to me, the Wednesday saga was "ongoing" also, had been for 8 months or more
I was just trying to work out how EFL reasoned it out, but in fact I think juttyp's post (no. 5 above) explains it better.
