Absolutely. It makes no sense and merely encourages financial mismanagement.

I think their anger could also be directed at the likes of Leicester City. Don't forget that it was mainly Leicester's "administration" which resulted in the EFL punishing clubs with a points deduction.

This has me astounded, from their forum:

I really fear for the future of the club now. Only a few weeks till the start of the new season. We don’t have owners or a manager and won’t have many players left. What will the EFL do next when we’re not in a position to start the season? They’re going to destroy the club.

How the sodding hell is it the league's fault they won't have any owner or players, so won't be in a position to start the season? It must be a horrible situation for them, but come on people!

It's that thing about perspectives again. I get the feeling that those of us who started following BFC in the mid-70s or earlier, have different views about the club than fans who started during our more successful periods.

Wigan entered the league in 1978 as a small town club and played in the bottom two tiers until Whelan bought them in 95. Ten years and a new stadium later, they reached the top flight. Fans who started supporting from 95 onwards probably have no realistic base to work from. It's been success after success, funded by Whelan's money rather than a solid sustainable model. If I was cruel, I'd say that the FA Cup should have been inscribed with "Whelan's Wallet" rather than "Wigan Athletic". But I'm not that cruel.

The whole idea of rich tossers playing God with football clubs is nauseating. The fans involved lap it up, because they have little choice, but it's fake success IMO. The problem is that it creates false expectations and, potentially, huge problems down the line, as I suspect Wigan fans are about to discover.

Interesting that WAFC were the fifth attempt at creating a stable football club in a rugby dominated town. The previous four clubs disappeared. Doesn't bode well...

I don't see that as bad news at all Whitey. I'm proud of our niche as little owd Barnsley, constantly battling against the odds - and as often as not overcoming them.
20-21 is my 61st season a Red and I've never been prouder of my club than I am right now.

Me too. It's one of the reasons why I fell in love with the club. It was mine. Ours. Our brilliant little town's! You went to Oakwell, and I'd bet at least 95% of the ~5k average crowds we had at the time lived with 25 minutes of Oakwell. I just couldn't ever see myself wanting to support and go and watch a huge entity like Man Utd or Liverpool, like a lot of my mates did, or even the Sheffield Clubs.

Because they believed that there was a queue of billionaires waiting to snap them up had the corrupt efl not pushed them though the relegation trap door. Totally deluded of course but I do believe the administrator has much answer for fostering this misconception.

Losing a million a month is courting disaster, I can't understand any fan thinking that's ok....the fact that others are losing more is no reason to be happy with the situation.

Whilst we will never have a ‘massive’ :) fan base I would like to think that if we had a 8 year stint in the premiership and a FA cup win we would have crowds in the 17/18 thousand region. Certainly significantly better than what Wigan enjoyed.
Barnsley is pretty well placed geographically as well, served by the M1 and not far from A1

Top London QCs charge around £1000 per hour - niche ones potentially more. For an appeal (8 hour day) + preparation work, that bill alone could be heading towards six figures.

It's the stay away supporters that Barnsley need to return. Stubborn folk that will only turn out to watch higher end Championship football and play-off pushes. The support the club had around the millennium hasn't just vanished.

Fabulous that some of our fans are in their 61st year, Ah feel like a newcomer at 50 years hahahah, Thought long and hard about what to write about the Wigan fans and their assessment of our club and fans. Going to be difficult not to ramble on about FFP, how we dint overspend their transfer budget/wages budget and all associated costs. but after much thought here it is...

    Barnsley fc = Championship

Wigan Athletic fc = League 1

Reality can be a very short assessment....COYR

I didn’t suggest our fanbase was smaller than Wigan’s. Only that theirs isn’t big enough to cope with spending outside its means, should an owner pull the plug on that spend. I then said neither is ours.

It’s a lesson to learn for other clubs. We had our own lesson at the start of the millennium didn’t we.
