I agree with all this and it was a brilliant night and a great time to be a Barnsley fan, as we may have mentioned once or twice before. Although the crowd was smaller, I think the biggest roar from a crowd at Oakwell though was when Clint Marcelle scored. The previous 86 minutes had been tense but that goal brought an end to nearly 100 years of league football without making it to the top flight. That all came bursting out at that moment.
We were in the Stand at the kip end (West Stand now, then The Stand) - fabulous view of an excellent goal during an exciting match! As a kid, I could never understand why the seating area was called the Stand (obviously short for Grandstand)
Belting match played in an unbelievable atmosphere. As others have said, how good was it going into every game believing we could beat anyone. Made our way to Chennels for post match refreshments as it was the only town centre pub with a telly and we wanted to watch the highlights on Sportsnight. Had to put up with that idiot Jimmy Hill saying what a poor game and how much of a clogfest it had been. Total ******.
Even today most pundits are clueless about lower league sides. So the Jimmy Hill memory does not surprise me. You would have thought they might want to do a bit of research. Dean Ashton is a bit like that - relies on stereotypes, rather than facts. But as Sir Ronnie Glavin said - it worked in our favour when fashionable teams came to Oakwell. They got taken to the cleaners with craft and skill. Remember the Brighton manager saying the Reds were First Division standard after the drubbing they got. He was right.
Remember watching from the brewery stand & in particular the Ponty going full on ballistic. Also I remember the paddy at Highgate pit breaking down & having to walk out(drift) but it was worth it .
Poignant memories. 1st match Mi dad missed when he was poorly and didn't make it to Christmas but still one of if not the best nights watching the reds. Thanks Trev!!!
Correct mate, And the memories of that night came flooding back, was in West lower near Ponty, one of the nights where ya realise what footy can do for ya
Still brings a lump to the throat after all these years excellent finishing from big Trev ...but what a cross from banger ....
For me Richie there's nowhere in all the land better than Oakwell period. A truly unique ground jam packed with happy memories interspersed with feelings of frustration, disappointment and and at times desperation. Having said that, I wouldn't have supported any other Club.
was it a weds evening too? something rare for us in those days my dad was disabled so we always sat in't posh bit ;-) and not far off in line where banger crossed the ball amazing night
Couldn't get in the Ponty (used to stand near the corner of the West stand), finished up in the Brewery stand near the away end. Had a great view of Hutchinson's shot that hit the post, hit Bobby Horn, narrowly missed the other post and went out for a corner. What a night and what a team.
Yep same, there were 4 of us on nights, 10pm start, got to our house in time for highlights, needless to say we were late. We had a brilliant foremean at the time ( a Wendyite ) gave us a soft bollocking and we worked our arses off for him. Brilliant night.
Banger's cross or Ludewig's? Great when playing on same piece of turf can do a mental overlay of the two positions.
