I agree with re- thinking Town Centres, but have we learned nothing with changing things too fast, the pit closures should be a lesson learned only too well.

Very true in terms of town centres not getting the benefit of lunchtime trade. On balance though, I've found myself using the local high Street independent shops, cafes a fair bit more. Hopefully these types of business are seeing an uplift.

Always liked to buy local if stuff is available.

Noticed when I've been in town, the market was a bit of a ghost town, which is a shame but understandable under the circs. Was quite impressed with the market kitchen, definite upgrade on the old tired market cafes.

That’s the Six Million Dollar Question tbh.
Imo it’s has to be a mixture of buisness and leisure .
Public Transport need to be managed imo it’s ridiculous that you can travel all over London for next to nothing whilst small hard up places pat a fortune .
A Yorkshire wide initiative on public transport to start with With very reasonable incentives to use them much like London and the other capital and major city’s in the Kingdom.
A safe controlled area in the centre with swings etc . Buskers corners for entertainment . Obviously offices for the workers which will attract spin off Cafes , restaurants etc.
Big improvements and incentives for market stall holders and users .
The days of the big stores in towns are over imo in smaller towns anyway .

Evolution happens over a period of time. Not over night.

When was the last time you went into a town centre?

I think the market is still a project in progress tbh although I hear bus trips from other towns etc are still coming .
Transport is the main bug bear for me £2 plus one way from places as Kendray Smithies etc(three or four main bus stops from town ) that needs addressing for day time anyway .

So instead of an Oyster card like they have in London, we could have something less posh sounding like a crab stick card or a prawn card:D

In this case it's going to need support from the government to be expedited.

Companies are not going to bring people back into offices. That should be accepted and solutions to the problems that causes need to be addressed. Trying to reverse it is just stupid. Not going to work. Waste of money.

Probably February, I would say. Not completely sure.

It's been obvious for years that offices were moving remote. Not sure why I need to go into town to see that. This hasn't come out of nowhere. It's been extremely sped up, yes. It was always going to happen over the next few years though. Help businesses expedite their plans that they should have for the next few years when offices were going to be shrinking in occupancy anyway.

That would be nice tbh .
What we have now is a system whereby people can get super rich but have to pay an acknowledgement to the community or country .
For example Apple make Billions and if left to their own devices would not pay a single penny to whichever country but are required by law to pay taxes (Not enough I know ) compensations etc etc .
But it would burn itself out because less and less customers would afford the products .
Company’s and entrepreneurs have a duty imo put back into the communities in which they serve (exploit).
Tax is seen by many as a bad thing maybe because of how authorities use them or how they come by them (taken more from the less well of etc)
God knows what sort of world we’d have without them though .

Defo something needs to change on public transport cost. Absolutely zero incentive not to drive unless you fancy a couple of pints as part of the trip.

Pretty sure it was £2.70 one way from Kexbrough other week when caught the bus. With the other half and the daughter, it is actually cheaper in a taxi. Always thought it was bizarre decision to get shut of the smaller town link buses we used to have which were perfect size most of the time and surely would have been cheaper to operate on most routes.

And improve local economies. Bring much needed business into smaller places to reinvigorate local economies. Convert the unused offices into housing and you then have the best of both worlds.

    Regardless of who owns it.

The services are not getting used.

Went Sheffield the other day on the rattler. Rush hour 5pm. It was no more than 30% full.

The train station was a ghost town. Barring Superdrug and the Costa everything was shut.

No Marks, Smiths Burger king etc.

There were more staff than commuters.

    Its not sustainable.

That’s something they never did on the scale they chased people from the town centres
Can remember in the sixties and the slums behind the Town hall etc .
When they vacated them and were we used to play about in them h in brill they demolished them , I think they built the courts and police station etc where the one we used to (play) In .
They moved them into council estates etc . decent homes need building into the town centre and not all flats which I’m a bit sceptical about tbh . As when the start aging there’s tendency to let them get into disrepair but a mixture would be good for Town centre imo .

You are going to have a bit of a shock the next time you do.

And no one is disputing that things evolve. But that evolution takes time.

Doing things overnight which is essentially what has happened is going to be catostrophic.

Already 1m jobs have gone. .

How many are going in October and November?

Six million isnt an over estimation.

Who pays their mortgages and rents? Where do they live when they get evicted?

30% full could be because of the current situation with Covid. A publicly run subsidised bus service in normal times would be beneficial to all, and a good use of tax payers money lmo

If I were forced back to the office I would avoid shopping in town centres on principle. The money I have saved is like having a 20% pay increase. No way would I be inclined to prop up dying businesses. And that's not even mentioning the environmental and work-life balance benefits. This is a chance to rebalance the economy.
