Any past runs in either cup are neither here nor there. We aren’t going to win either, and we aren’t going to get a plum away tie to go as supporters, at least not in the league cup. I’m not saying I want to lose the game - but the season is compressed, there is already a fixture pile-up due to the later start, and the 46 league games dictate our future, not a cup tie. I suspect every single team turning out in the tournament will feel the same. I couldn’t give a rats arse if we lost on Saturday - I do however hope that the performance shows some cohesion and promise. I’d be gutted if we beat forest and lost to Luton at home again. Lose to forest and beat Luton? Brilliant. Win both? Just as brilliant but gives another fixture, might get some tv money I guess.
Not remotely interested in this result, i just hope the lads get some shape, sharpness and confidence for when the real games start
81/82 season was the best run we've had. Beat 3 top flight teams Swansea (4.3 on aggregate), Brighton and Man City then holding European champs Liverpool 0.0 at Anfield on a foggy night in the Quarter Finals , before losing the replay at Oakwell 3.1. Edit: For clarity, we also beat Peterborough 9.2 on aggregate in the first round. Liverpool went on to lift the trophy that year.
T'was a proper comp back then, all teams took it seriously. Liverpool fielded the strongest side available in both games. Sadly it's a joke tournament today...get rid.
I’m sure Liverpool fielded 3 of the four home nations international captains and the ROI captain . That was some team and we gave them a game at Anfied and up to them getting in front at Oakwell.
You could say the same about the FA Cup to be honest. Personally I think we should aim to win any competition we enter otherwise what on earth is the point of even turning out on a Saturday?
It was very foggy indeed. My dad drove me and a mate from school (I was only 14) and the M62 was chocka with traffic due to the fog. My Dad got off at a random junction on the M62 and started following a van. "Where are we going Dad?" Says I. ""Following that van, it's going t'football match" Went round all these side roads for ages, then pulled into this big car park on some waste ground about half a mile from Anfield. Got in ground about 5 minutes before kick off. Dad's a genius, how he knew that van was going to footy, I'll never know, because there were no scarves or stickers on the van anywhere
