With Struber favoring playing a 'Gegenpresse' game our most effective formation is probably 3-4-1-2, especially as most of our opponents play with a lone striker or two at best. That means we need wingbacks more than fullbacks. Currently we have Ludewig, Williams, Brown, Oduor and even Ritzmaier that can fill that role. Should we go with a back four then yes we probably need another recruit. That said we've missed the boat and should have got James Bree back.
Until we know who is going difficult to see how we can move forward on incomings. Be a question or priorities if any, or all, of Mowatt, Cauley and Jacob go.
There are a number of comments on here saying we need a tall quick centre forward, but every club in the country is saying the same. We are most unlikely to get one of championship quality for a fee BFC is willing to pay.
We need a replacement for Ben Williams so probably someone on loan. Also a right sided central midfielder who could ideally cover for Mowatt in front of the back 4 as well if he gets injured. Sell Bahre & whichever one of Miller / Adeboyejo the managers rates least. Then replace Mowatt, Brown & Woodrow if they’re sold. That’ll do for me
The bench on Saturday was really weak and we have a number of players not expected to stay out of our better players. We need to strengthen in big numbers.
Thought Victor did alreight first haif and still aint seen enough or owt of Miller to just write em off.
All we need is another striker, they are expensive assets but we need to splash out on one ..... we need another dimension up front to up our goals per game rate,
No CHs on the bench on Saturday. I know Halme is in international duty, but GS doesn't seem to rate him there in the system we play. So we need cover there, especially with the Bambo situation looking like it won't get resolved soon. We need another LB/LWB as cover for Ben Williams. Mowatt & Styles are going to be our 2 mainstays in Midfield this, so cover for the loss of one of these is vital. We have enough flexibility in the rest of the squad to play anywhere across the rest of midfield/ strikers. Apart from Woodrow, that striker with an eye for goal. So need a replacement for him if he leaves.
That's fine, but how does that player fit into our pressing style of play. The strikers, as we can now see, are our first line of defense. Do we sacrifice the forward press for a more clinical striker? How more effective does that make us? How many more chances does that enable the opposition to create?
I think we definitely need to strengthen further - for two reasons: 1. I think I'm right that this season is a little shorter and as a result the schedule is busier. This increases the need to be able to give players and if we're to be competitive imo we'll need a bigger match ready squad than we currently have. 2. The majority of our players are still young. There will be spells when their form dips and we should have some strength in depth to take them out for few games.
The bench wasnt really week - it had Collins Brown Oduor Frieser Thomas - only Miller could be argued to be weak, - we had Schmidt and Halme on international duty. We have Palmer to come back from injury - but despite that it is still a decent bench - its not what I would call really weak. The side has a good team spirit which took time to create - bringing in "big numbers" will disrupt that and in any case where is the money coming from to make big numbers of signings of players better than we have already. If Brown Woodrow or Mowatt go then they need replacing but I dont expect all 3 to leave - maybe one or possibly 2 but I wont be surprised if we keep all 3. Stability is what is important in my opinion
Just wanted to expand on the first point. Our pressing style is taxing on the players and periodically I think we see games where individually or collectively we're lower energy and not as effective. Reading away was a really good example for me - we just looked tired that day and they were fitter and stronger than us. I don't think we can afford games where we're not at it, we need to be at our best every game and therefore we need to be able to give players a rest without it greatly impacting the overall strength of the team. Our squad isn't good enough to do that imo
Assuming no other members of the first team squad are sold, I think there'll be another two or three signings. Obviously, if any of our first team regulars are sold, I'd expect them to be replaced as well. We let Pinillos, Thiam, Radlinger & Dougall go and also sold Wilks & McGeehan. So, hopefully, that allows the financial opportunity to bring in a few who can challenge for places in the starting line up.
I deliberately didn't include those lads as I don't know if we're contributing to part of their salaries.
Also , as some have already said, with Williams looking at a long term injury and the fate of Diaby is still not clear I feel more will be coming in.
Defo need a another forward but needs to be different to what we have. A bit of a battering ram type forward who can hold the ball up. Doesn't need to be a prolific scorer. We saw too many times last season that we struggled to close games out. So even if the direct approach doesn't suit strubers plan, it offers that approach late into games when energy levels have dropped etc.. Would also liked to have seen a ball winning midfielder.. someone to get stuck in. Mowatt tries but he's not very physical. So just someone who doesn't get bullied and brushed off the ball easily..
