You do realise we turned down an offer for Brown last week? Not trying to throw water on your fire but we did say no.
I should perhaps have written 'any bid' Loko. And for the avoidance of doubt I'm not saying it isn't good business. My post was in response to Nudge insistence that the club wants all players to stay and that whilst GS may have that preference, in reality they will consider selling at the right price. I proposed what I thought was a more accurate statement.
But on the flip side of that many of us, myself included, have said the board/club should make noises in the media about players not being for sale to drive the price up. It seemed, on the outside anyway, like we never did that last Summer - with Pinnock especially. Maybe our stance on keeping the squad of players together has driven up the price. Which is exactly what we’ve criticised them for not doing in the past.
Can’t pay, don’t take him. Easy. I don’t think we will take £2million. In fact I believe the club refused more than that only last week. I was just making the point that he is worth much more than £2million in the current market, some on this thread were suggesting this was a good deal. Players are sold from league two and even non-league for well over £1million. So £2million for a 22 year old ever-improving player; strong, quick, a proper grafter and unselfish, with 95 professional appearances - 42 of which at championship level? Not even if we were in administration would that be a good deal. The Covid situation reduces value to a point, hence I say about £4mil up front with add ons and a sell on. Otherwise he should be attracting bids north of £5mil up front.
£3.5m + add ons taking it upto £5m, is very good business for Brown imo, if that’s the case. I don’t think he’ll develop much further at Stoke though imo. He’ll play, but just not sure he’ll develop.
To be fair, 3.5/5m is being reported in the same places as 2m - that is with no official source. We should reserve judgement imo until anything is official, and just pray that we've done ok financially out of it.
Still difficult to say. It could be 2m guaranteed, with a bunch of add ons. Could even be 2m up front. Personally, I don't know why fees have to be undisclosed. I just wish they'd stop using the cliches like 'reinvesting in the team'. Maybe once the window is over, they can give some real explanation. Have we had to sell because we're skint? Have we cashed in to fund a bid for another player? Reaction to player sales would be a lot less hostile if the club weren't so predictable in what info / quotes they released.
"decent chunk of money" That really isn't a ringing endorsement of a fee for one of your best players.
I have to agree, if we must sell a first team regular with 2 years of a contract left I don’t understand why we can’t get 4 million for him plus a sell on. Especially to a big club like stoke who can afford it.
There was an old bloke who sat behind me in the Ponty. Hated Brad Potts and didn’t see what he brought to the team. Ofc, he was sold. He then moved onto Jacob Brown. Everytime he touched the ball, he wanted him to stick it in the top corner. I’m actually quite excited to see who his next scapegoat is! Speaking of scapegoats.......
Brown certainly isn't worth any more than 2.5 million if that is the correct figure. The issue is why sell him? I've heard rumours that he wasn't really in Strubers plans but I just can't see it being true as he picked him nearly every week. I just don't see the need to sell if we're not getting silly money in. We really should be looking at Brentford to see the kind of fees they get in for their best lads, they are a shining example of how to be a successful selling club.
