Today I won't be getting ready in the next 10 minutes and heading off for a few pints and meeting up with the lads . I won't be trying to squeeze a last strongbow down before inevitably missing kick off. I won't be promising I'll be back straight after the match when I've absolutely no intention of doing so. And I won't be ruining Sunday when the missus isn't talking to me.

I won't be having a bet online, after realising how much I lost last season. Having worked in a bookies, and seen first hand the effects of gambling addiction, I thought it would be something I'd always manage to keep a lid on. But with online gambling, it can get away from you without you even knowing.

I'm still having a bet, but I'm going old school. I'm going in a bookies and having a £1, 12 team acca.

For the first time in many years I won't be driving to Barnsley for the first game of the season, I won't be having a couple of pre match pints with my oldest friends, I won't be taking note of all the changes in the town centre since last time I was there before walking down Belgrave Road with thousands of tarn supporters, I won't be buying a halftime draw ticket, I won't be bumping into anyone I used to work with/go to school with/live near and shaking hands,I won't be shouting YOO REDSS at the top of my lungs to greet the team.
    **** innit !!

It's crap innit, not being able to go to the game? :(

One thing I WILL be doing though, is popping round Mum and Dad's for dinner. Mum always makes mi dinner before a home game, bless her! :)

For the first time since 1981 I won't be at the first home game.

I won't be catching the National Express coach to Leeds then the X10 to Barnsley. There will be no fish and chips from the Codfather before I go and visit my parents. There will be an empty seat on the 12 bus going into town. One less figure will be walking around town before walking up to the game and buying a program.

I won't be getting up 20 times during the game because the bloke next to me has a bladder the size of a peanut.

After the game there will be 2 less pints bought in the Garrison before heading back to Liverpool. Gutted!!!!

Today I won’t be getting up ten minutes after kickoff to let the same couple past who are ten minutes late for every game, I won’t be getting up two or three more times for them to individually go for a piss in the next half hour, then again when they both come back five minutes before half time to go and get another drink. I won’t have to get up again five minutes into the second half when they come back, or for another toilet break each, or again as soon as the clock reaches 85 minutes when they leave. I won’t have to hear the bloke shouting random abuse to whoever takes his disdain in a red shirt that week, or them gleefully sing the song about Bambo’s c * * k, despite being surrounded by a load of families with young kids. I won’t have to see the stewards talk to them every game about one thing or another for them to do pretty much the same in the next fixture.

From the family stand, without a child ever being with them. I believe they buy an under twelve ticket every season and never use it so they can sit up there - I’ve no idea why, it’s not exactly the best spot (though I’ve grown to love it so won’t move now). Suppose it was cheaper.

Maybe when we get back they’ll have moved due to the universal cheap pricing...

Bit of a rant but in all honesty it doesn’t spoil my experience too much.

I miss going to the games terribly. I miss walking up ponty road with the lad, having parked up, then being inevitably tapped up by him for an overpriced god awful hotdog in the ground which he loves, I won’t get a pint (seen as I’m queuing up for you for a hotdog I might as well have a pint... it’s his fault!), I won’t be chastising myself for swearing in the family stand when there’s kids around, I will still probably have the nervous feeling in my stomach but on a nice leather sofa, not a red plastic folding chair.

Going to games has a different attraction to years gone by now I’m going with my son, and I’ve no issue with those who have a drink before and after, it’s all part of the experience for a lot.

I do have a problem with those who have a skinful, can’t control their gob, behaviour or bladder - and worsen the experience for all those around them though. I also can’t understand those who turn up five to ten minutes late for each half, leave when there’s five minutes plus stoppages left, go down for halftime five minutes early for halftime - and miss three or four minutes a time on several separate occasions to go for a piss - they can’t see any more than 60 minutes of the 95 ish of play on any given week, and even then I’m not convinced they can see much anyway!

Today I won't be waking up with a massive hangover and regretting the stupid decision to be part of the team that sets up the FanZone.

Only half of that is true today.

This is the first time I've missed the opening game of a new season at home since we beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0, August 1967. I'll miss barnsley66's sage & wise comments that balance out my rants and ramblings, usually over the performance of the match officials!:D

I won't be studying Nudger's Bridge with the ridiculous notion that there may have been some progress since the last time I walked past.

I won’t be driving 135 miles each way eating petrol station sarnies and pasties, arriving at the ground at about 1pm, mooching around the club shop looking are overpriced crap before being one of the first into the ground and watching it fill up. I will however be watching Stockbridge Park Steels v Stalybridge Celtic on the bbc red button, (I’ve a soft spot for them from when I lived at Deepcar), before settling down in front of the Mac at 3pm.

This is JUST ALL WRONG!! Who are these faceless people who say you can't attend a match today, or you can't go racing today, or you can't do anything remotely connected with being in a crowd and enjoying yourself?? Enough is enough. Why can't people be trusted to act responsibly and just take steps towards a normal life again (yes, I think I know the answer to that!).

Sickening that I can't attend the opening game of the season today. Sickening not knowing WHEN I can go again. I'll be watching on iFollow this afternoon, but it's not the same is it :(
