^^^^^^ A true legend. have spoken to him on occasion. Very humble when he received an award from Hoyland reds at a POY presentation eve. (We asked him to present the awards) Meant a lot to him. And we were delighted he accepted the invitation. Standing ovation. ( just one stain on his career. Joining l—ds )
Av a look at thissen. There were players at all clubs that were happy where they were.( It wasn’t all about wages in those days.) He had a career that spanned 2 full decades nigh on. That quite clearly shows he wasn’t garbage. He was exactly as his career showed a player playing at a level his skills and abilities suited. ( to use garbage is an insult to any right minded human being) To use your anology ( that’s why he spent so long at the reds) Matt le Tissier wasn’t one of the top players in the country cos he didn’t play for for the elite. He was in demand from those clubs. Could have smashed the wages he was on. But he chose to stay with the club he loved. James Coppinger another. How many times have we or others been in for him. I too watched spud all his career. You are disrespectful in your wording to say the least.
I watched him for years, he was a solid, tough tackling defender, not **** as you say. Also learn to spell.
I used to work with his daughter at Yorkshire Bank, New Street. Watched him play from 74 to 79. Will look forward to reading it.
As someone who watched Spud play for the first ten years of following Barnsley, he was a regular seven out of ten performer. Rarely having a stormer of a game and rarely having a poor match. He didn't race down the wing (like David Booth on the other side did), but was a solid, if unspectacular, defender. For me, a true Barnsley legend.
If I have one fault with him it's that he's lived down here decades and never lost that bloody accent to gain a Tarn one
And Full backs were exactly that. Mate. Not many if any. Did anything other than required which was to mark wingers. I remember Boothy but honestly struggle to recall him racing down the wing.( Don’t doubt you for one minute.) Probably my real first memory of a wing back so to speak was Phil Chambers. Another underrated player by some of our fans. But I believe a big part of The kings ( Ronnie Glavin for those who wonder) performances. Their link ups going forward one of the highlights for me.
Spot on, mate. Nobody gets picked over 500 times for one club - or even across several clubs - if they aren't a solid performer. I'm not a buyer of autobiographies, but I wouldn't mind reading this one. The recent interview with Mick McCarthy got me all nostalgic about the late 70s/early 80s period. Those were the days... and Spud played a big part in them.
Wind your neck in pal the truth sometimes hurts as I said nice guy but players like spud were the reason we languished in the fourth division for most of his time here the reason he holds the appearance record is no one else thought he was good enough to buy or sign now I'll do my spell check exercise whilst you go dream of Barry Murphy's greatest moments should take all of Five seconds
Thanks for that. Hadn’t watched it before. Brings it home how much I love this football club and the town and it’s people. ( I recommend all fans of all ages watch it. And you may already or will understand the meaning of being a Barnsley fan ) Anyway must just nip off now to wipe the drips of tea off the top of my T shirt.
You’ve killed no myth or legend . How Barry Murphy played or what division he played in had got nothing to do with his Legend Status to vast majority of us Reds Fans .
Disregarding the spat With BB . The truth hurts when it’s factual. I’ve not seen anyone agree with what you said. It’s the way you said it that was totally disrespectful, of a great man and in most people’s eyes a good solid pro. You are also entitled to your opinion agreed. My opinion of your post was of someone trying to be clever for the sake of it. Absolutely no need, you could have written it without the insults to spud . If you disliked him as a player. fine. We don’t all agree. I didn’t admire certain players and would say so, Others would disagree. Players like spud also gained promotion. One man does not make a team. Based on your theory every player in history would be garbage at some point. If you can’t see what everyone else sees. That your post was unnecessary in the way you put it. Then it’s pointless debating with you. You very rarely post and you decide to come out with that. As I say “av a look at yourself.” That’s not an insult to you by the way. That’s truth’ Ps watch the video . and see why he signed for Barnsley and not clubs higher up the pyramid. Unless you want to call him a liar that is.
It's due out on Wednesday so any idea if our own club shop will be selling them for him and even better if we can get hold of a signed copy? Will sort a few Christmas presents nice and early.
I used to speak with him, when he was scouting for forest. Always thought it was a real shame he wasn't working for the club he plied his trade for. I was glad when he was working in the legends suite as a PR. Great bloke and true gentleman.
Nice bloke is Barry. Holds the club record number of appearances and probably always will with the way things work now in football. He always attended the church service at Our Lady's RC Worsbrough, well he did like the rest of us until it was closed due to covid. He always sits at the back , a bit like he did when playing for the reds.
