The only reason that any industry collapses is because the government chooses to let it.

The only reason that any individual business goes to the wall is because the government chooses to let it.

The only reason that any person is short of money is because the government chooses to let them be.

If live venues, pubs, restaurants or other business has to close for a period of time to lower or control the infection rate then the government could quite easily choose to support that business, industry or sector and the people that work in it. In terms of annual government spending, the additional cost would be minuscule.

Unfortunately, pubs and bars are rated as one of the most highest risk venues and numerous pubs have had to shut - the infection rate in Wetherspoons staff is around 200/100000 or 10x the rate we quarantine people returning from holiday. Schools are also high risk, and even if the kids are just coming down with cold then the measures in place are insufficient to prevent the spread of COVID. Over 800 schools have had positive cases in the last 3 weeks.

The first lockdown wouldn’t have been needed if Bungle had stopped or restricted flights/travel from Wuhan and then Lombardy the infected regions .
Instead he decided against going to meetings sending Comrade Cummins and joking his way round hospitals .
After the calamity of this shambles of a govt he then orchestrated a lockdown that was too little too late and almost ineffective whilst dishing out vital PPE contracts etc to his friend or friends of friends.
No doubt many people connected to govts ministers have made millions from this catastrophe it’s a disgrace imo.
The test and trace instead of being contracted or at least tended to competent administrations instead went again to friends of ministers or Tory donors and this is unforgivable imo .
This second wave has been enhanced by Govt incompetence and arrogance .

The curfew set out for 10 till 5 in pubs is to stop young people gathering now they are back at uni... Combined with the rule of 6 they are stopping large gatherings away from the settings under curfew.

We have pubs around here in Selby that have opened till 3 in the morning making themselves into nightclubs not following the guidance on hygiene and distancing and as a result we have had a large increase in cases.

Testing round here isn't readily available either with slots being offered 70 miles away in Burton if you drive and no availability for postal tests or walk in sites either.

The issue isn't just a young person one but if we allow thousands to travel all over the country and gather in pubs/clubs untracked at university we could potentially see an even bigger rise.

It's a really tough time for the hospitality industry and if we aren't careful another lockdown will kill a lot of it.

Went out for a meal the other night. Waited at the entrance, temp checked, hand sanitiser, elbow greeting, all staff in face shields and took straight to the table. Pubs have been just as good and pretty similar, with most places taking your details. I think a lot of the problem seem to be bars in town and city centres looking at all the freshers night outs the media have churned out this week.

My cousin, in Selby, got a test at 48 hours notice last week in Leeds. No problem at all. It was more difficult than when his wife got one a few weeks ago but he still got one.

I run a pub myself you get pubs going to the rules we are aloud 38 people inside and 60 outside "weather permitting " everyone has to be seated no standing and drinking.I also know of a pub what had over 300 people in Saturday night it's places like this what's contributing to the problem and not following the rules. It's places like this that will get the hospitality sector closed again

Yep. I run a place too - we're working at just under half capacity (in an already small venue) and turning away dozens of people at weekends. One guy grumbled about it on social media and said that in future he'd be going to places where he could "definitely get in". The sad part is that the pubs and bars which are carrying on as normal are probably doing better trade, and will have much more money in their pocket to ride out a second lockdown if and when it comes!

He was lucky then I would say. If you don't drive we have no provision for those not lucky enough to get a postal test and if you do Burton was the only option for most of last week.

We do have sites at Drax and Sherburn not in Selby itself one day a week for over 18s that you must drive through which is not enough to cover demand.

We have seen quite an upturn in cases over the past few weeks and the testing just isn't there to deal with it meaning people are having to isolate for 14 days on sick pay not knowing if they have Covid or not which isn't good for them or the economy.

Hopefully both tests came back clear and they are well.

I'm just down the road in Beal/Birkin and thankfully thus far (touch wood) I haven't needed one. I know Selby numbers have increased a lot recently which is worrying - especially without tests to know you can keep working and living.

100% this. If it is genuinely believed that there's a link between hospitality and increased cases, then invest in additional presence on the streets and close anyone breaking the law to the level you describe below.

Similar to the first lockdown, where we should have been protecting the vulnerable and letting the rest of us carry on under safer guidelines, punish those guilty of neglect and let the rest run their businesses and try and save their livelihoods.

Oh right not far away then! It's a nightmare that way on at minute with A19 still being shut isn't it! I work at the Olympia just over the toll bridge so it's a bit of a nightmare at minute not knowing if we will be open week on week with cases going up.

How about this for an idea. Close any venue that flaunts the guidelines and suspend the licence. I've been to two places in the last month, both of which followed the regulations. It's like the whole of the class being kept in because the teacher can't deal with the naughty kids.

That's it. Don't worry the covid marshalls will sort it out.

I literally avoid it at all costs! To get over your way I go through the back fields of Birkin and Hambleton (past The Owl - were I worked at 19/20) to get anywhere that is heading north.
