Looks like they are shutting up shop 128 cinemas and 500 jobs going
What does that mean for the town centre development

 

Only temp till next year no blockbuster films being released

 

In the Chronicle it said they were carrying on with it.

 

Just said exactly the same thing. Lost 1.5 billion but with nothing new coming out or being put back and only showing old releases then it was about to happen.

I'm surprised Parkway haven't gone yet

 

Another case of a business not doing enough to keep going. Other entertainment businesses are having premises used as makeshift courts for example. It's like when restaurants and food businesses complain about footfall because of WFH but don't offer a delivery service to make an effort. I can see Cineworld blaming James Bond being delayed again but that's the right decision.

 

I don't know the financials or whether it would actually be viable but I've always thought that parkway would really benefit from focusing on the old movies anyway. Cineworld is clean and functional and great for action movies etc but parkway could really be the venue of choice for the romantic evening especially with the restaurants that are going to be right on its doorstep.

 

Could be and they have also spent some money during lockdown, renovating and adapting it to maintain social distancing

 

Surprised they have tried to carry on this long. The movie industry will take years to recover from this. Cinemas could take even longer to recover, if at all. It is a business that is currently completely unviable.

 

Go to Parkway every time.

2 adults and 1 child, drinks and large nachos costs LESS than 2 adults alone at Cineworld.

They’ve refurbished it all, new sound system and have great film specials on.

Why drive to Wakey or Meadowhall when it’s on the doorstep.

 

There’s greater issues too - released online is picking up pace. And I think Odeon? have fell out with Disney over it - in respect that because Disney are going direct online releases, Odeon are refusing to shown them at their places. Something like that anyway.

 

How exactly would you keep a cinema going at the minute?

 

And please explain how cinemas can convert to what you think is in your head. Pretty sure they’ve considered most avenues. The parkway doubles up as a concert venue. But no concerts can take place. Without massive losses. Theatres have received financial help to try get through the pandemic. It’s no different. Regarding getting enough people in, to at least offset some of the losses. John Peachy I believe is in the entertainment business.( disco I believe) What would you like him to do for example. You make it sound so easy.

They could have tried that route as it would be better than giving up and quiting. They could have looked into their venues being used by schools colleges and unis to help with social distancing or as conference rooms or used for lectures.

 

They might choose to do that. They've said they are closing the cinemas for up to a year, not closing down the business. You can't offer your building out for different purposes without shutting them first.

Absolutely, particularly with there being a new cinema opening in town. They'd do well to do something a bit different. I suppose the only drawback to that is the relative ease of being able to watch almost any film, both legally and illegally at home nowadays.

 

How long ago did they renovate it? The last time I went, it was the first time I'd been in about 6 years, and I got a little nostalgic as it was identical to how it was when my parents used to take me regularly in the 90s.
