I was there sat amongst West Ham fan’s in there main stand after scrounging some complimentary tickets off Mick Clarke as he got off team coach. Great night
Thanks from me too KT. I was there that night. A special performance. we murdered them. Cockles of the heart warmed for sure!!
I phoned the West Ham club shop a couple of days after the match asking when the video would be available to purchase. I seem to remember a couple of comments along the lines of "You are joking, aint cher mate?" I then explained that I was from Barnsley although living in the south and would really like one. They took my order and it was despatched a few days later. I kept that VHS tape until a recent clearout - I think I gave it to Kendraytyke for his collection.
Just watched the highlights of this. When Barnsley scores their 5th there was lots of clapping and cheering from the home end! Was this sarcastic West Ham fans or brave Barnsley fans?
Sarcasm from the home fans, plus a bit of genuine appreciation for our achievement I would hope. I think the Hammers have always had a good reputation both on the pitch and with their fans, although there have been the usual brain-dead factions in their ranks who think it's clever to make trouble. No doubt they are still there, along with their kids who have grown up with that mentality.
I've often said that was my favourite match and it's hard to beat. My family are West Ham fans and I traveled down on the supporters' coach with a Leeds-supporting mate. My Dad came to pick us up from the ground but we got overtaken by the team coach and he ended up chatting to Allan Clarke. Teenage me is clearly visible on that video, looking gawky and torn between crippling shyness and wanting to explode with celebration.
Great to see Futcher going forward with the ball and then finding passes in behind the defence. I'd forgotten how good a player he was.
I was there, i met my mate (a Hammers fan) in the Bolyn before and after the game. What a night that was.
Never knew we had a player called "Foootcha" playing for us. Never felt threatened at Upton Park, although hammers are my second team and was there when they won the FA Cup in 1980 so always bang on with them about that. Seem to recall going in 1990/91 when they reversed the result, we were 2:0 up at half time and lost 4:2
I was there that night, with my mum and dad who had come down from Barnsley and were staying with me. Paul Futcher's performance that night sticks in my mind, as well as the journey back to Southfields on the District Line, where we had to stay schtum in the midst of Hammers fans.
And some body yesterday said they had had 33yrs of relentless disappointment.Must have missed this game by a day. Also the numerous wembley appearances, playoff games,Man u,Chelsea,Liverpool etc cup games. He must take some satisfying.
A bit before my time- I think someone has posted the highlights to this game on here before... A great watch!
No it’s just that some people have selective memories and can’t help but moan. “Worst team ever” blah blah .......yeah, right!
Tarn in mid 80s was weird as a kid watching. Only thing that was consistent was our inconsistency. One week we'd hammer a team the next we huffed and puffed to draw or loss. It's weird how you remember the players though, loved watching Aggie, Gray and Bezz.
