If you look at the results, he didnt actually lose every week. And if you look at the defeats, we were competitive and often let down by individual mistakes. We lost 7 (4 of the teams finished top 9) of 11 league games. One was 2-0 at Hillsboro. Dreadful mistake by McGeehan and then a soft shot Radlinger should have saved. We lost at Brum when we should have drawn, awful defending and another shocking bit of defending with Radlinger in no mans land. Luton we were awful first half but with the amount of chances second half we could have ended up drawing (undeservedly). We drew at Wigan and should have won. we lost on Sky to Leeds and Brentford. The former we were the better side til we tired in the last part of the 2nd half and Brentford, Cavare was at fault for all 3 goals, which concluded in a hat trick for a striker who gave Liverpool the run around a few days ago. In between we battered Forest and lost 1-0. Their fans were hugely complimentary about how we played. We drew with Derby with a last gasp equaliser, but we conceded 2 very sloppy goals and should have won, I think was it Mads who had an absolute nightmare? Then the wheels fell off at Preston. In all or most of those games we had a go and tried to beat teams despite having the youngest and most inexperienced side in the league. We had so many changes and our core was ripped out. Some through choice, others not. So I don't recognise this assertion that stendel was to blame for over expansive tactics that led to our underachievement. Trying to mould such a team so quickly was incredibly difficult and I cant imagine anyone managing to turn that team into world beaters at that time.
Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't backed. but we bought about 12 players in the summer after promotion after selling Davies, Pinnock, Lindsay (and then at the last minute Moore). Were some of those signing Stendel's? I guess we'll never know now. All said though, don't you think something else must have happened to get them to sack him? We aren't a club that sacks managers, just need to look at LJ to see that.
And remember how the team a few years earlier were bottom of the first division but went on to get promoted. Sometimes it takes time for new players to gel and build experience. Maybe, just maybe, Gerhard benefitted from those first 17 games.
I wasn't a fan of Little Lee, but one thing he did say which is evidently true related to experience. I recall him saying to judge that team when players had played 100 games not just 20 and 30. Not only are you looking at individual incremental improvements as they understand their own games and take on board coaching and direct experience of successes and failures, different pressures and situations, but they get to understand their team mates and the bigger picture over time too. Having a new keeper, new centre halves and very young full backs once Stendel fully gave up on Cavare, thats a lot of time needed to get that working as cohesive unit. Hecky had the same issues in his second championship season with lots of new recruits and not knowing what his best side was.
I believe he had earned the right to have his opinion listened to after his achievements of 2018/19. Personally, I don't believe any comments coming from this particular board. Common sense dictates that expecting a huge number of new players (most of whom never played at in the Championship before, some hadn't even played in this country) to gel immediately is barmy beyond belief. Just a couple of experienced players could well have been the difference. But I'm used to hearing now that it's always the fault of the Head Coach, never the board. This is especially true from some who were quite happy to criticise Patrick Cryne, so excuse this lot of anything. As for not sacking managers, it's what this club has done on a regular basis since the days of John Dennis. The only man who lasted two full seasons in charge since Danny Wilson left in 1998 was Simon Davey.
However, 100 games is 2 full seasons. Whilst I agree to some extent with the philosophy, owners (and fans) require success quicker than that in todays world. All too soon is the gun fired when a few games are lost. Come the end of October, silly season will start in the EFL and PL firing managers near the bottom of the league
I know, but something else happened between Stendel and the board to make them fire the trigger. Did Stendel force something because he wasn't being heard by the board? Who knows and daft if he did. Was he trying to "engineer" a move to Huddersfield? More money, but why would he if he's happy in Barnsley etc. Something else has happened....
Spot on we have hed huggins of managers, once they want to spend then their days were numbered. Now we sell em like players.
I know what I believe & been told, but as I can't prove it I'll keep quiet. The past two Summer close seasons have had a feel good factor about them, for different reasons. By the beginning of October 2019 & 2020, both Head Coaches had moved on. It appears very few these days who are in charge (be it a country, football club, or whatever) are willing to follow Harry Trueman's mantra.
Got to agree. Great for L1, but his tactical nous was limited in the Championship. Regardless of the squad. Struber was the next step-up and came at the right time. He was more tactically aware and detailed in game plan. Stendel admits in the interview - he set up to win regardless. You can’t get away with that in the Championship, and he didn’t..... Do like the chap though, and wish him well. Was a great season in L1 under him.
“I think we must never lose the relationship and the link to the local people, the local fans that support their team that intensively.” Love that. Board - please write and repeat 100 times.
Stendels worth as a manager was floundering with each game in the Championship after a promotion season , so he went touting himself around for another job without being honest about it , and was quite rightly shown the door
Such a convenient rumour planted by the owners to try and cover themselves after an absolute horror show of a decision and non communication. I've not seen of late how their alleged legal action against him is going....
It was the same with Heckingbottom. Basically threw in the towel after the board sold a couple of players.
I strongly believe he wasn't sacked for talking to other clubs, and the alleged legal challenge from Conway doesn't seem to have any evidence of it, does it? So why, for a person so seemingly litigious threatening all and sundry, is there no evidence of a case, whether through the football structures, or outside? I thought we were 23rd under Stendel by the way?
You’re saying he wasn’t and have proof ....the Owners ( which include the Cryne family ) say he was talking to other parties without permission , I must have missed Stendels wrongful dismissal case
