I don’t understand the team selection. A back five, fair enough, but Henderson and Rice sat in front of them seems way too cautious and derive of any creativity. To top it all off Trippier looks so awkward playing on the left hand side that he may as well just stay back.

    Mount over Grealish too, mental.

Agree about the back five, but the biggest problem for me is the lack of a ball carrier in the midfield - Henderson and Rice are too defensively minded and can’t break lines. Seems like every pass from the two of em is sideways or backwards. Bring back Ray Wilkins!

Never been a quality coach Southgate, he's clueless.

Picks some awful players regularly, Pickford dier, rice, Winks, mount none of these should be getting games, all positions with better choices.

I’d get rid of him too, it’s a shame because il always have the memories of last World Cup, but the football and team selection at the moment looks so uninspiring! Far from being able to say we are the best in Europe never mind the world.

Decent 2nd half by England. Slightly better finishing and we'd have won this comfortably, poor team selection or not.

I do agree though, Coady is a better centre half than Dier, Phillips a better DCM than Rice, Pope better than Pickford, and a fit Harry Kane is the first name on the team sheet.

I thought we were the better side, particularly so in the second half and should have won more convincingly but for missed chances.

Obviously not the strongest XI, with a number of players not starting who normally would. And I don't think there are more than a handful who I'd call world class, available to Southgate. But what he does have, is a really diverse and deep pool to select from. A lot of youngsters too, who'll get better, assuming they're getting the necessary games at club level to aid their development.

Still turned over a very strong Belgium side, the world number one apparently based on FIFA's rankings. Not often they lose games.

This last few years under Southgate is the most interested I've been in England since I was young. Yes, maybe they aren't the big names we once had, but they did buggèr all when it mattered. This group reached a World Cup semi a couple of years ago and I'd fancy us to do well at the next few tournaments too.

Good to see the negativity of the BBS extends onto the international scene too. :D

I’ve fixed that post for you because you didn’t mean to be crass and aggressive did you?

It’s take way more effort trying to bypass the swear filter than it does just thinking ‘if I’m trying to break it then it probably isn’t worth typing’. It’s a thread about a game of football. Leave the political angle at the door. We’ve already had one decent thread hijacked today.

We were far from the better side in the first half, but improved dramatically in the second. A good sign that the manager realized this and did something about it.

the defence who played like strangers in the first half found a way to nullify lukaku and I though de bruyne stopped getting in behind as much too.

enjoyable game though because despite the short comings it appears they are trying to do the right things, SouthGate might have learnt a thing or two by playing a few of these lads
