I thought Palmer was our best midfielder

By some distance. In both attack and defence. A better manager would have had the bottle to replace Mowatt rather than Palmer.

If we get the midfield trio of Kane James and Mowatt that is being demanded, I can't say I'm looking forward to all three dropping deep to collect the ball off the defence, looking up and seeing no one ahead of them.

I agree. Thought he was superb. Calm, accurate, busy, and surprisingly good at keeping the ball when under pressure.

I also thought Mowatt really upped his game second half after a really, really poor first. Some crunching tackles that allowed us to break up the pitch and made use of the ball, switching it a couple of times well and being on the ball much further forward or arriving late.

I thought when Kane dropped to get the ball Mowatt didn’t, which gave us options, plus we play with a front three so more options there. Then we have our wing backs who were nearly always available, especially first half, although Williams vs. Oduor was different levels sadly. I find myself shouting at Oduor to wake up and be more aware.

I agree but he’s just come back from a serious injury, no point pushing him too far when we’ve got a manic schedule coming up.

I think Palmer has to play, as odd as that sounds. He's got an engine, he's strong in a tackle and he plays the simple pass to keep us going.

It'll be difficult for the new manager because we've got James, Kane, Mowatt, Styles and Palmer for 3 positions. Kane has to play, as does James, so then it's left to who compliments those 2 the best - and at the minute it's probably Palmer.

I just hope we don't get square pegs in round holes again and end up with Styles wide left and Kane wide right.

I don’t think Palmer came off because Murray got it wrong or anything like that I think he just took him off because it was his first start in ages after an injury.

Oduor was next off who also hasn’t started in ages

Palmer for the time he played was our best player by some distance. Really impressed both with and without the ball.

It was mentioned in commentary and above in this thread that he’s not long back from injury and I guess we’re not wanting him to break down again.

I’m a big Mowatt fan but with Kane, James, Styles and the emergence of Palmer he’s going to have a fight on for the shirt. That being said he could play number 10 instead of so deep.

I don’t agree that Palmer (or anybody for that matter) has to play - I thought he had a very good game and has made the coach’s job a bit harder but surely that’s a good thing.

Rotation is the key with so many games and players like James and Palmer coming back from injury and I don’t know when the last competitive game that Kane played either? I can see the starting 3 changing and subs at 60 mins.

That’s a good shout. I can see Mowatt and Styles being better options at Number 10 than Thomas.

Rotation is the key you're right but you wouldn't want to make 3 subs at the same time on 60 minutes as that would leave us with no subs for half an hour. You'd leave one sub intil yhe last 10 minutes

Mowatt has been in the comfort zone for too long as captain for how little he brings to the team with him being woefully out of form. Now with James, Kane, Styles, Palmer and others hopefully he doesn't think he's undropable.

I was really impressed with young Palmer. He offers something different to our other midfielders. If he can continue showing that kind of form, then midfield will definitely be our strongest area when everyone's fit.
