Quick question Any recommendations folks..I've got a couple of fridges that need attention thxs in advance
I fixed the 3-way fridge in our motorhome today. It stopped working in all 3 modes which suggested to me that the coolant had leaked out, however, I could see no evidence of that. I searched the web and found several suggestions to turn it upside down for a day then turn it back for another day before trying it. I was rather skeptical but it worked a treat.
Is it likely to go wrong again? And if it does will the upside down trick work again? It would be a bit of a faff doing it while on holiday....
JG Turner Barnsley based Engineer. Never used them personally but a friend who has a business speaks very highly of them. If I were you Shed I'd get a firm ceiling price for call out and the possible cost of spares and labour. I say that because just recently we have encountered a couple of local firms who we called upon for quotes for what we thought were very simple plumbing jobs. Job 1. We had a leak between the soil and vent pipe and the connection to a close coupled WC pan. We had a similar problem around three years ago. To solve it, the plumber we employed fitted a new dual flush cistern. We sourced Clarkes of Ossett for the recent job and true to his word the engineer attended promptly. After quite an amount of messing around ( circa 2 hours), we were advised that the cistern that had been fitted, was not compatible with the existing pan and pipework. His solution was to rip the whole lot out and fit new ( including a new pipe connector from the pan to the soil and vent.) Estimated quote excluding VAT was circa £180. Told them to proceed. Turned up next day and after circa 3 hours 30 minutes jobs a good 'un. A week later bill arrives. Charged for the 2 hours for first visit, then transport to and from merchants, labour and materials for day two, plus VAT. Total bill, an eye watering £485. Nearly dropped bow legged. Job 2. Dual purpose tap on a Valdares vanity unit in our bathroom seized up. Contacted Righto Plumbers after looking on the internet. Told that if the existing tap could be repaired cost would be around £95. If a new tap had to be supplied and fitted, cost would be circa £130. Plumber called and presumably phoned Righto to outline possible cost of his labour after we decided to agree to the fitting of a new tap. The following day, my wife had a call advising that the all inclusive cost would be £285 plus VAT. Obviously the quote was declined. My son then recommended his plumber who happens to live locally. He came along the next day. We told him about Job 1. His verdict, " what a boad of lollocks". All that had been required, was a new seal with copious amounts of sealant. However if he had been asked to fit new, he would have charged circa £200 plus VAT tops. For Job 2, he provided a top of the range dual action mixer tap and converted the waste from the previous mechanism which had been a push down rod at the back of the tap, to a pop up waste. Total all inclusive cost was £140.! Needless to say, he will get first dibs at any future plumbing work we might need doing. https://www.jgturnerrefrigeration.co.uk/
My mate who was in the game told me that It's all about gases and liquids in the compressor system and sometimes they just need stirring up...apparently they used to say that it would have to go back to the workshop, load it in the van and do the rest of the day's calls and then try it. It worked for me and carried on working for years...but obviously if the compressor has gone, or there is a gas leak, it's game over ( unless it's a commercial piece of equipment)...it could be just the thermostat, in which case it can be bypassed to test it...I can't though advise you on doing this.
If they are commercial then my company (Collingham Catering Services Ltd) can help. Ring us on 01937 583266. If they are domestic then it may be more economical to replace them. I hope this helps. Gaz.
