No I don't think he did. I wasn't that bothered to be honest. Even though he achieved what he did I wasn't bothered that he left. In fact I can't think of any other head coach that didn't spark an opinion other than maybe Robins. Maybe I'm giving him a compliment. I'm not sure. I was numb to his departure and most of his stay.
Wasn’t really here long enough for me to get attached. I know a lot were upset about Stendel leaving but I didn’t feel he was here long enough for it to bother me that much. I try not to get attached to players or managers as I think they’ll all be leaving within 2 or 3 seasons. I find it hard to see any Bobby Hassell’s or Steven Foster’s that are here for the long term
No he didn’t. Something I found very strange. I have been tempted to post something about it - because saying nothing is IMO an indication of friction within the club - but haven’t posted anything because Struber could release something in the near future.
Bobby Collins did very well for a season and a half. He steadied the ship so to speak between Big Norm leaving and Clarkey 2nd spell. It was under Collins that we got to an FA cup quarter final after beating Southampton away 2.1, the game was talked about on here recently. We lost 4.0 home to Liverpool in the quarters to a second half Ian Rush hat-trick
Collins was dealt a very poor hand by the board at that time. Firstly, they refused to give Ronnie Glavin a new contract that Summer thus allowing him to leave on a free transfer. Then, a few weeks before Christmas, they sold top scorer David Geddis to Birmingham, even though the player never asked to leave. For Bobby Collins to get us to mid table in Division 2 and to the quarter finals of the FA Cup was a remarkable achievement, especially on the back of the miners' strike. The board then sacked him.
Collins also had to put teams out in front of 6 or 7 thousand fans cos of the strike, rather than the 14 thousand we had been used to. His time in charge is sometimes lost in the doom and gloom of the area at the time.
"I try not to get attached to players or managers as I think they’ll all be leaving"..... You make them sound like lab rats
If he had given a statement to the official site he could have gone on about "my boys" that he's left behind one last time.
Ahhh that’s why I haven’t seen one ! That’s not a publication I ever peruse. So nothing via the club media? A bit strange, if I may say so.
i vaguely remember that season, it was in the days of "we can't afford to go up" geddis had banged in loads of goals for us in and were nicely set for a push on, but he got sold, or in todays market, stolen and birmingham went on to win promotion cash was desperately hard to come by and sure we even sunk to 3k fans, even though all my mates used to sneak in the years before, most had swapped to the wendys by then it was a decent team but virtually no tv and fans skint from the aftermath of the strike, shame
I'm pretty sure the 3k ish fans was post Hillsborough disaster, when we were told to only have seated spectators, so we had to close the Ponty end. So we sat all supporters in the newly build East Stand. Season 94/95 springs to mind, I remember having less than 4k supporters for a Swindon Home game at the beginning of the season. We went on a bit of a run after that and just missed out on playoffs under Wilsons first season in charge
it was pre Hillsborough, that was 89 this was the season of bradford & heysal i just googled some quick stats out of curiosity, 3k fans last home game v wimbledon this wiki page gives geddis/birmingham a few mentions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984–85_in_English_football
