My iPhone 7 is wearing out and I am looking at replacement. All the current iPhones ( except the SE which is basically a 7 with a new processor) use Face ID rather than Touch ID. How does that work with Apple Pay when by definition in a shop you need a mask these days. I pay for just about everything with Apple Pay these days so just wondering how that works when you are wearing a mask. Has anyone with a more modern phone figured out how this works.

If Face ID doesn’t recognise your face itl say use passcode underneath. Just click that & type your passcode in instead

I wasn’t quite sure. But I’d also had a few glasses of Merlot so may have missed it :)
I did have one for a while. I’ve still got one of these in my loft somewhere

I have face ID. Hated it at first, love it now. It doesn't work with masks. It just doesn't. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

The way it works is that the Face ID option comes up as normal, but just underneath you’ll see a button that says something along the lines of “verify with passcode”. Click on that and then you can key in your numerical passcode instead of using Face ID. Means payment etc takes about 5 seconds instead of 2 but not really a huge inconvenience!

I find it fiddly when I feel under pressure to pack my shopping and pay and I'm all stressed cos everyone is huffing and puffing. I've gone back to using my card most of the time. It was a great convenience that is no longer more convenient than reaching for my wallet and I'm missing my finger print scanner again. First World problems and all that, no hardship, but I wouldn't be in a rush to get a phone with a face scanner in current times. Finger print is much more convenient. I'm back to entering passwords and codes all the time and after a few years without that it's a pain.

Definitely understand where you’re coming from and I often feel the same anxiety when I’m shopping! Ultimately though people just need to learn some patience- it’s still a hell of a lot quicker than it used to be fumbling around with cash etc

Definitely better than cash. I wish phones had both, face scanner and finger print recognition. My old phone had a finger print scanner on the back so I didn't have to move my hand. I'm very tempted to get it back out and use it as my main phone again, rather than have it as back up in case I break this I'm using now.

Apple Watch is the answer. My heart sank a little when my missus bought me one for my birthday recently but I now couldn’t live without it. It takes the Face ID out of the equation as you just double click the button on the side of the watch and it automatically accesses your apple wallet and you simply present the watch to the reader.

Same. I use my Apple Watch 90% of the time these days.

You could always buy a clear mask instead?

Am I the only person who doesn’t use fingerprint recognition or face ID? I’d rather type a code in thanks (not that I have ApplePay set up anyway).

Face ID Apple pay is superb........so easy and convenient it’s untrue, I’m almost to the point of leaving the house with no money or no cards
