Albums.

I first heard Court of the Crimson King in an English lesson at school. We were all asked to bring records in and I took The Freewheeling Bob Dylan as I was a bit of a folkie at the time. Another lad brought Court and Schizoid Man just blew me away. A few years later me and 3 mates went to work at Butlins in Filey and we lived in lines of staff chalets (more like prison cells) one morning as we were falling out of bed, the opening guitar riff of Schizoid Man blasted out from another chalet and within minutes a crowd had gathered outside.

I saw them at the Limit Club. Don't remember them playing the Leadmill. I saw them at that Apollo gig, Saw them at Milton Keynes, supported by the Ramones, Spear if Destiny, REM, and then finally Wembley stadum, supported by the Pretenders and Spear of Destiny. After that I lost interest.

 

First LP I bought was "Great War Movie Themes" in about 72 I think, when i was seven. 99p "Music for Pleasure" label.

After that it took till the first Clash album for me to get my hands in my pocket again.

Rainbow - Down to Earth. From Casa Disco. Quite dull and tiresome listening back to it recently. I dislike Blackmore's guitar tone.

 

The Prodigy- Music for the Jilted Generation. On cassette. No idea where from.

 

The Vibrators - V2 from Cashmans records in Coalville, Leics. £1.99 if I remember right.

 

Mothermania .. an early compilation that introduced me to the brilliance of Frank Zappa.

 

16 years old and I bought John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers - Looking Back featuring amongst others Peter Green, Mick Taylor ,and the one and only Jack Bruce. Still magic, listen to it a lot.

 

I had a lot of CD's given first one was What's The Story Morning Glory by Oasis. Then my Dad bought me a CD Recorder for Christmas from Richer Sounds and some blank discs. I used to rent CD's from the library and copy them for myself. Then my Dad got a computer with a built in re-writer so I just used to use the P.C. I think the first album I actually bought was Supergrass - Life On Other Planets. I bought it with my EMA. I then went through a phase of buying music and Rolling Stones London Years Singles Collection followed along with Lennon Love compilation.

I started buying CD's at home matches from Barnsley HMV. In 2001 I bought Rainbow - Best off, followed by The Who Sell Out and A Quick One. I've lost count of the albums I have now.

I bought Greatest Hits albums to see what I liked and with some bands ended up buying their full catalogue up until the era I liked least. For example I have all the Rolling Stones albums up until Exile on Main Street then I think they went a bit **** after that. I like all the Queen stuff until they went all eighties with beat boxing and shoulder pads. Deep Puprles early stuff is their best stuff. I have all their albums up to and including In Rock. Led Zeppelin 1,2,3 and 4. Then Physical Graffiti.

I’m impressed SD. I’m similar but my OCD means I have to obtain the whole discography of the bands I like.
I don’t really suffer from OCD but I have all my albums catalogued in my computer. Almost 3100 cds last time I updated it.

 

I'm currently working on completing Spotify...

First album I persuaded someone to by for me was the Monkeys Greatest Hits probably from Woolworths in the mid-70s - I liked the pictures on the cover at 5-6.

First album I bought myself would probably have been "Bat Out Of Hell" in the early 80s.

 

The first cd I bought was Piece Of Mind by Iron Maiden. Must have been around 85 so for 35 years I have been adding to my music collection.

 

First albums bought for me (on vinyl), Arena (Duran Duran) and The Hits Album (better than the Now equivalent at the time). First albums i bought (on CD), Boss Drum (The Shamen) and We Can't Dance (Genesis).

 

If you've amassed 3100 albums in 35 years, that's seriously impressive. It's more than 7 per month on average. I might have to revise my opinion of tight-fisted Scots.

OG I have to admit quite a lot of the albums were purchased from charity shops. £1 a time. Great value.
Sparky and Burgundy both have viewed my collection.

 

I hope it didn't sound like I was doubting you, Ian, cos that certainly wasn't how I meant it.
The charity shops sounds like a good idea, I might have to start looking there.

Haha nice one mate. I remember a few years ago when down for a game I did a tour of your charity shops in town and picked up an Eric Clapton album I didn’t have. Cost me 20p. Best bargain ever

 

My sister got me Cream Best Of for Christmas over year so I went out and bought the Disraeli Gears. Excuse the spelling. It's that long since I listened to them. I enjoyed the pyschedelic rock though. I think a lot of Jimmy Hendrix's stuff was genius too. I listen to All Along The Watchtower Best Of quite a bit.
