What was their keeper crying about when styles scored?

Junior school playground rule: No Blasters.

 

I remember David Geddis scoring on his debut from a cross by Tony Cunningham (I think) in front of the ponty near the west stand. Me and my dad were standing in the corner and I reckon the ball was at least a foot out when he crossed it....

I wondered if their keeper thought the same today. Difficult to tell from the angle we saw it to be honest, but if anything it would look further out.

He raised a hand as soon as Victor got the ball back into play. I have stopped and started the highlights a few times, and he might have had a point, but....it was very close....but we'll take that one

 

It’s a little bit disingenuous to suggest it was ‘nowhere near’ out of play.

I don’t believe the ball was out of play, but to my eye a good part of the ball was over the line, it was certainly relatively close.

 

Bearing in mind also that the line is part of the playing area it defines so the whole of the ball has to cross the outside edge of the line not the inside edge. At the time, I fully expected a gk to be awarded and the goal not allowed but slo-mo replays show the ball stayed in play imho.

 

I thought it had. Prepared to concede I could be wrong, but "nowhere near" going out is clearly incorrect. It was very close.

 

I’ve watched it a number of times and it doesn’t look like it went out but it’s a close call but the goal deserved the decision to go in our favour.

 

In a word...No cos the man with the whistle dint blow and rule number one is and always was play to the whistle..

Rule number 2 is...no crying wen ya lose..

 

In real time, I thought it had gone out.

But after replaying the goal 431 times, I can definitively say, that it didn't go out.

 

Me and my lad looked at the Villa-Brighton penalty incident. He’s adamant it was. I’m not convinced enough that it was. So, No. The different angles tell different stories. Goes to show how hard it is sometimes for refs to make the right decision. Think I prefer REF. controversy to VAR controversy.

 

None of this deserved decision malarkey, that’s for penalties and such like. .

IT WAS’NT OUT, SIMPLE AS.

 

The point is that the whole of the ball has to be over the line and not just the touching surface. There can be clear daylight between the bottom of the ball and the outside of the line and it is still in play. That's where people get it wrong. They see the line and think it's out. Goal line technology has disallowed dozens of goals where the bulk of the ball is in the net but maybe the outside couple of inches are still on the line. Watch anyone take a corner, the ball is rarely touching the line. So in summary, it was clearly still in play when Vic crossed it.

 

On reflection, my comment of "nowhere near being over the line" was somewhat OTT. However, I didn't think at the time, and still don't, the ball was over the line. Simply because an opposition player sticks his hand up claiming that's happened is certainly not an indication. How often in a game do you see players doing exactly that when claiming a throw in, corner or goal kick when it's clear that they're simply chancing their luck?
It actually reminded me of Oduor's goal at Brentford last season. The number of Barnsley fans who were convinced Clarke must've been offside simply because the goalkeeper stuck his hand in the air and appealed was laughable!

I've watched it back and it's still nowhere near. Just because a tiny part of the ball touches the line doesn't mean the entire 1 foot ball has gone over the 4 inch line. I'd say that counts as nowhere near.
And the keeper had the best view in the ground, he was looking down the line. If he can't tell the difference between a ball just touching a line and one going past him to the outside of the pitch then he's in the wrong job.
