So I have a first world problem - planning to replace my old iphone 7 - battery is shot and I expect it will fall off the supported phones list next year I cant decide whether to get a 12mini or a 12 pro. As I see it the advantagesof 12 mini are 12 mini about £250 cheaper for 128G version smaller and lighter so easier to hold and put in pocket Advantages of 12pro are Longer battery life Bigger screen Telephoto lens and Lidar 2G more RAM so faster operation Has anyone got either of these and found any pros and cons ( Yes I know both are stupidly expensive but I am too immersed in apples tech to switch to android) I already discounted the Pro Max as just too big and the standard 12 - if getting the bigger phone I will get the max
I wouldn't worry too much about the RAM. Apple devices are so well optimised it won't matter. I have the 12 Pro Max, but honestly I don't see the benefit to the 12 pro (non max) at all. You'll never use the Lidar and I doubt you'd notice a massive difference in camera. If you're not wanting a huge phone I'd probably just go for the regular 12 or 12 mini, depending on the size you want.
Have you thought of going Android? OK, there are political issues, the Huawei but it (the pro mate) is the best phone I've ever had. I had earlier Samsung Galaxy's but moved away to OnePlus and now Huawei and they've both been brilliant. Good battery life, decent screen, quick
Dunno where the Huawei story is heading.... https://www.theguardian.com/technol...-bans-new-5g-network-equipment-from-september
Not even on the telephoto? The 12 non pro dont have the telephoto lens - I think I also read something about a better dark mode on the Pro
Depends what you use the phone for to be fair. It’s not something I’ve ever used I don’t think. I have the Apple upgrade thing so I only upgraded from an 11 pro max, which had a 2x telephoto and I never used that either I don’t think. Although I’m not sure how much the phone uses it internally I suppose, it does take phenomenal pictures.
Everyone I know seems to knock Apple’s quality/value, but I’m still rocking an iPhone 5S from 2013 and it works absolutely flawlessly. They’re good phones
Just got the 12 mini, it replaced an 8 which had a shot battery, no problems with it at all and the battery life is a vast improvement. New shape means you have to get a new case, as I use mine when I'm out cycling it also meant a new quad lock case as well and bear in mind they no longer come with a charger or headphones.
I’d go for the mini hands down because I can’t stand large phones, a smaller screen can be annoying though as the cookies warnings often don’t fit properly and can be difficult to click quickly. My battery just went in my SE so I bought a new one and the tools to fix it together for £25. It’s like brand new again. If there’s nothing else wrong with it I’d do that and get another year at least out of it. You could always buy the 12 next year when the price has probably halved.
I did think about just replacing the battery on the 7 - I need to do something because I barely get half a day if I am using it and even if I dont use it it struggles to last a whole day. but it would be good to get a newer phone - if I want last years tech I could just get the new SE as its basically an iphone7/8 with the iphone 11 innards - though only one lens but think I like the idea of buying the laters and hopefully getting 3 or 4 years out of it like I did with the 7, or the 4s before it
Id only need to one new case - and I already have the charger on my 7 - not think I need to buy a new one as not desperate for the wireless charging
Thanks - looking like the Mini at the moment from the replies so far I guess £250 is a lot extra for a 2x zoom and in general I prefer the smaller phones - I have an ipad for anything needing a bigger screen
I've just upgraded my sons phone from a 6S to an 11, he wasn't too fussy about having the 12, but then again, he's not paying the bill so he has limited say
Just gone for the 12 pro, was going to get the normal 12 but because I wanted a 128gb version price difference was only £6 a month to get the pro version which should hopefully future proof it for a while longer.
The question for you is do you use your phone one-handed? If so, get the mini. It’s almost as one hand usable as the original iPhone SE which just died on me. I have the new mini and it’s a dream - full specs, good one handed use, high quality screen and camera, near top specs, and not carrying a computer in my pocket.
What Tony said! Android is much better if you are willing to move away. I made the move a few years ago after getting a job where I got given an android works phone and I wont go back to IOS. I currently have the OnePlus 8 Pro and its by far the best phone I have had and one of the best spec wise on the market. OnePlus make some amazing devices. So many superb phones in the android market from other manufacturers too. I personally would stay away from Huawei though, no doubting the brilliance of the phones themselves but due to the ongoing issues with Google etc. for me I would stay clear.
I still have my 6s, and it’s running the latest OS. Apple replaced the battery for £25, so still like new.
If you value security, stay away from Android. Simple as that. Got better over the last couple of years, but still nowhere close to IOS on that front. Saying “just go Android” doesn’t help either if someone already has Apple Watch, iPad, AirPods, MacBook etc.
