Due to the recent threads looking at past away days at Rotherham has got me thinking about my best away games. There's some strange ones here, but they are hugely significant to me. Here are my Top 10 1. Sheff Wed 0 Barnsley 1. Easter Monday 4th April 1983. Glavin "super sub" solo goal 2. Liverpool 0 Barnsley 0. 12 January 1982. Taking on the European Champions in their own back yard and nearly, so nearly pulling off the impossible. The fog, the journey, my Dad "following a van" getting off the M62 miles from Liverpool, getting to the ground on time.... 3. Liverpool 1 Barnsley 2. 16 February 2008. Comeback Victory at Anfield. Luke Steele, Steve Foster, Martin Devaney Brain Howard. Simply brilliant 4. Millwall 1 Barnsley 3. 29 May 2016. Playoff Victory at Wembley. Fletcher 1-0 up after 2 mins, Hammill's wonder goal. 5. Oxford 2 Barnsley 3. 3 April 2016. First Victory at Wembley - Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Come from behind victory, Hamills excellent pre-cursor to the Wembley playoff winner against Millwall. Excellent day out, and the Oxford fans were great after the game also. 6. Man City 1 Barnsley 2. 7 September 1996. Late winner from Marcelle in front of packed Maine Road near the beginning of promotion to PL season 7. Rotherham 2 Barnsley 4. 14 Nov 1981. Banger hat-trick, come from behind victory at local rivals. 8. Wolves 0 Barnsley 5. 9 March 1991. Demolition of Wolves, just excellent. Significant for me as I'd just moved to Birmingham and worked with Wolves fans. In fact one of them gave me a lift to the game and I thought he'd left us "high and dry" as I couldn't find him in the car park afterwards. In fact he'd moved to the top end of the car park and p1ssed himself laughing when he drove up behind us lol. He took the defeat well enough, he was a top lad. 9. Blackburn 1 Barnsley 2. 15 September 1990. "Borrowed" my Dad's car, went to game with a mate, then off to Blackpool for the weekend. I was starting the new job in Birmingham on the Monday, so had a great weekend beforehand. Rambo's winner on debut. 10. Reading 1 Barnsley 2. 31 March 1997. Another Easter Monday game. After this one I truly believed promotion to the PL was on. However, it's got more significance for me as I'd recently moved to Wokingham (near Reading) with my job in 1996. There you have it, my Top 10 away games.
Great selection. Add Boro away in the FA cup and York away in the fog along with Blunts when we went top of the league in the promotion year and that's about as good as it gets. YOOOOOOOOOREDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSS
Huddersfield away in the play-offs. They already thought they'd won before the game was played, it was wonderful to stick one up them.
Good selections there, I was at all of your choices bar the Man City game, captain of the cricket team at the time, so couldn't go. I'll add a few of my own to the list, Huddersfield and Cardiff in the 2006 Play offs, Wimbledon in the last promotion season, and Northampton on a Thursday night in Allan Clarkes promotion season always sticks with me for some reason. Just remembered another Walsall in 2016 Play offs, another Thursday night!!
When they equalised on the night they were sure we were done, and as I remember so was I! What atmosphere it was when we banged those 2 in, wonderful night.
A personal favourite of mine was Manchester United away in the FA cup, I'll never forget super johns little legs going like little pistons to get onto Schmeichels miss kick!
Peter Jackson dancing on the pitch when they equalised and then crying at the end of the game. One of my favourite memories.
Thinking about it I've probably been to around 250+ and you do have to get used to losing! Had some horror seasons following us away!
I don’t know if I’d put it in a top 10 but MK Dons at the start of Flickers reign was a brilliant day out & although it was a Cup game it felt like the start of the Great Escape. We took almost 4,000 down there & had about half the crowd. The performance & atmosphere was great & big Marlon Harewood going crazy at the end was fantastic
And the 0-5 under King Keef for me. Winning 2-1 at Plymouth to secure championship status was a good (but messy!!) bank holiday weekend too. Drawing 1-1 at Old Trafford in the cup when no one gave us a chance.
Always remember the 3-2 win at Sunderland under Hendrix after the Prem relegation. Ashley Ward missed a pen, scored and got sent off all in space of about 10 mins. Sunderland clawed back our 2 goal lead to level with about 10 mins left. Then in injury time McClare got brought down in box and Darren Barnard sent keeper the wrong way with the pen to win it. He was always cool as a cucumber from the spot.....until Wembley.
