England and Surrey opener. I saw him play a few times for his county. There goes another one from my youth. Not Covid related though.
Played for Surrey at Shaw Lane in Benson and Hedges Cup in 1978 Surrey scraping home by 1 wicket gritty left hander played 77 tests for England.
I think I was at that one. Also saw him play at Headingley, Southampton and Gloucester. Very elegant batsman.
That partnership with Brian Close, I was there at Trent Bridge, it was frightening cricket! RIP John Edrich! Ooops, it was Old Trafford. Memory failing fast...
He hit the first ever 4 in ODI cricket. A stat I learned today. Bit before my time but a great player.
Here's the 4 in question. Back in the days where boundaries were a good size! https://t.co/vaj6TZ2VT0
Old Trafford barrage of short pitched bowling unlimited bouncers then . Robin Jackman was in the Surrey team then asked me if I supported Leeds at football while playing at Shaw Lane.
Remember being at Headingley for a one day international against the Aussies probably way back in the 70s and he came in at number 3 and it felt like he’d scored a couple of dozen runs unspectacularly but when I looked up at the scoreboard he was 92 not out. A guy from a different era but a sad loss nonetheless.
Played many a game of cricket with pen, paper and dice with John Edrich opening the batting for England.
You're right of course, it wasn't Trent Bridge, it was Old Trafford. Still a frightening sight, magnificent brave batting.
