I bought a few pairs of jeans from that shop. Also a lot of music stuff, (guitars, pedals, amps mostly) from Jax Music Exchange a bit further up. Was in like a little hut as I remember.

I think (and I could be wrong here, often am) the official line is that the data submitted to MHRA showed that the second doses weren’t all given after 21 days during the clinical trials, and that there was effectiveness with dose given 3-12 weeks.

That said, it is still wrong. They should’ve had a program planned based on 3 weeks, just get on with it. This is just a panic button press because of the mess we’re in.

Apologies, I thought you were saying the vaccine was untested.

It seems like a risky decision. Pfizer are quite correct to point out the limitations, so I wonder where they are drawing their figures from to 'show' how effective the one dose would be?

Edit: I'd imagine it doesn't stop being effective, but is less effective than within 12 weeks.

They should certainly show the evidence to show what they believe is the efficacy after 3 months. I'd imagine it doesn't stop becoming completely effective so they're taking a risk that it will prevent people from becoming seriously ill, yet those people are likely to be elderly people, which is a tad contradictory.

I can see it getting to a point where something like six months down the line you get a third dose for better protection. So instead of dose 1 followed by dose 2 three months later you had a dose 3 three months after that.

They'll be hoping that in 3 months it's just gone away, just like they did in June last year with the gloriously effective "eat out to help out" scheme.

Just for clarity here is what pfizer have actually said

Pfizer said the safety and efficacy of the vaccine hasn’t been tested at the new interval. “Pfizer and BioNTech’s Phase 3 study for the COVID-19 vaccine was designed to evaluate the vaccine’s safety and efficacy following a 2-dose schedule, separated by 21 days. The safety and efficacy of the vaccine has not been evaluated on different dosing schedules as the majority of trial participants received the second dose within the window specified in the study design,” the company said.

Pfizer also noted there are no data to demonstrate that protection is sustained after 21 days from receiving the first dose.”

So my huge question is. Where is the science to support this change. I really don’t get it.

There is no science, these lovely people are making it up as they go along again. Maybe they've got hedge fund bets on getting to 100000 covid deaths?

My Word! 'New year same as old year'. So many medical experts on here who know better than those close to the science. Firstly, the bottleneck ( pardon the pun) has been reported in various places as shortage of glass vials rather than the vaccines. Makes sense since all the different vaccines come from many labs and others that can switch production easily. However there must a limited number of manufacturers of these vials and I cannot see that it would be easy to magic up new factories to ramp up production to the levels required in the short to medium term. It Is a shame that the negativity and constant criticisms of authorities making difficult decisions by people not knowing the facts leading to certain decisions being made has continued into the New Year. Let's all of US lighten up and look forward to this mess being over sometime this year. It Is not as of this collective moaning and anger about the Govt on this BB makes one iota of difference. Happy New Year!

That's the point though - the makers of the vaccine don't know, so it's not clear how exactly the government would know. Which makes it reasonable to ask the question rather than put blind faith in a government which has demonstrated time after time that it couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

I’m not a medical expert and happily admit to the fact. It doesn’t mean I can’t question why the government is ignoring the experts who have data from trials to support their vaccination program. And doing it a different way with as far as I can see no supporting data. If they have the data to support this then let them share it but I dont believe they have any. I’d love to be proved wrong but their track record on “following the science” doesn’t inspire confidence.

On thing I don’t blame them for is the shortage of vials. At least not yet anyway.

Oh I do. They've allowed manufacturers of glass bottles etc to continue making none essential items instead of instructing them to switch to the emergency production months ago?

They should have been instructing (and paying) many companies to switch operations to things that would have saved so many throughout this year but instead did nothing except tell everyone to sit at home

And bearing in mind which minister they've put in overall charge of vaccine distribution!! World-beating incompetent.

Through either people forgetting or delays in getting it etc, We’ll end up with most folk not having the second jab.

I think the number crunchers have led to the change in strategy now the new strain has appeared. Whilst the second dose efficacy is a relative unknown I can see a certain logic, given the all important first dose gives the bulk of the protection, in getting the maximum number inoculated to give the virus fewer potential viable hosts. A bit like a shipwreck in shark infested waters where you get as many people onto the rafts (or by any means possible) out of the water and to safety in as short a space of time as possible before worrying about transferring them in smaller batches onto the rescue ship and only then going back for more. Bit of a naff analogy I know but I hope you get my drift for want of a better one.

And so the bit of hope we all clung onto for 2021 will be extinguished again by this incompetent government Great!
