We did have a good squad and it was definitely capable of getting the semi final and beyond, but I think the tournament highlighted Keegan's lack of tactical awareness. I was a big fan of Keegan, but he definitely lacked the requisite planning or tactics to win a major tournament.

I think he resigned that night.

I thought he resigned straight after the home defeat to Germany in the World Cup Qualifiers in October?

I'll go for a couple a probably think of more:
    1) Featherstone Rovers 20, St. Helen's 6 in 1958. It was like Barnsley taking on Barcelona in the cup and winning. Post Office Road's capacity was somewhere around 7,500, but, with a little shuftying around, they got 15,000 in that day and the atmosphere was quite unlike anything I have known. Cyril Woolford sprinting in for the clinching try - magic - memorable;
    2) Frickley Colliery v Grantham Town, probably in 1968 or about then, when I was working as a summer job in South Elmsall and joined some pals at the game. Roy Senior and Tiger Jones, both ex-Reds, were playing for Frickley. I can't remember the score, but think it was 1-1. Memorable because you could hear the banter amongst the players, a lot of it barely repeatable. A Frickley player went down injured and one of the Grantham players came over and said, 'I can see there's f... all up with thee.' Another one was, 'pal, do that again and your will find your kn.....s up round your neck.' Nice to hear first hand such sportsmanship.

1992 Charity Shield at Wembley, Leeds 4-3 Liverpool. Dad was a Liverpool fan, I was nine. It was the first professional game I ever went to. (Didn’t start watching Barnsley until the age of 11).

Cantona got a hat trick on the day, and Gordon Strachan scored a comical own goal that seemed to happen in slow motion to make it 4-3 in the last minute - which should have made injury time frantic, but nothing much transpired.

Dean Saunders scored for Liverpool, looked lively with Rush, and so it was completely bizarre that Souness sold him to Villa a couple of weeks later, though for more money than Leeds sold Cantona for.

Also a cup winners cup tie in 1996, last game my dad ever went to as MS was properly taking hold by then. Liverpool were 2-1 up from the first leg away at FC Sion so it was going to be a cake walk at Anfield - Sion were 2-0 up after about 20 minutes, and then after being pegged back went 3-2 up and ahead on away goals. They ran out of luck and energy though and Liverpool ended up winning 6-3 on the night, 8-4 on aggregate. It was pretty cold and miserable at Anfield, it was Halloween and a Thursday night, but the atmosphere was great second half, really bouncing, though nothing on what I experienced in the Ponty end six months later v Bradford.

ha ha I was at that game! And a few others in the competition. Loved my time in Belgium/Holland but not so much when England were playing.

Was at Scarborough v Wolves. Boro’s first League game. Lad fell through the roof. I’ve been to a lot of footy matches over the years but this and the play off Semi v Birmingham were by far the scariest I’ve attended in England. Serves me right for having a weekend in Filey!

Was at Celtic Park in the late 90’s when Rangers won 3-0 to take the title. Hugh Dallas collapsed when getting coined (after a Willard of a performance) one lad fell off the top tier onto the concrete below and Rangers players ‘did the huddle’ after the final whistle- upsetting one or two people further!

To cap it all, after the match the Police decided to take the Coaches with Celtic’s England bound fans on a circular tour of Glasgow’s orange quarter. I’ve never seen so many Rangers fans celebrating. From bairns in their prams to old fellers waving both walking sticks - with everything in between. Not many teeth on display though.

There were over 200 coaches so as you can imagine there were one or two holds ups. Coaches getting attacked and People getting on and off taking part in sporadic battles right up to the M74. Absolute carnage.

Remember the club used to run trips to the final - think each club got a certain amount. Remember my mate from Carlisle went to that game as his sister was friends with Joe Joyce

I was at that one, too. Didn't Salah play?

And then Canada v US two days later, for the women's semi-final, I think.

I was at that match too ... and the next one, the Final in Paris, against Bayern Munich. Used to watch a lot of the local football teams back then - both Sheffield clubs, didn't mind seeing the Blades when Tony Currie was on form; Huddersfield Town when Frank Worthington was there; Donny Rovers with the Snodin brothers.

Liverpool v Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford in the 1989 FA Cup semi-final replay - main memory from that game was the emotion of the event, especially just prior to kick off.

Hull KR v St Helens at Elland Road in the Premiership Final on 11th May 1985. Mal Meninga played his last game for St Helens that day and scored a wonderful try, running almost the complete length of the pitch. Perhaps more significant was listening to the radio, on the drive home, of the tragedy unfolding at Valley Parade.
