Has signed for Bristol Rovers from MK Dons. https://www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/2021/january/george-williams-signing/
Good luck to him, thought he was brilliant in our promotion team, and seemed able to play wherever he was required. Was quite disappointed we didn't offer him a new contract when we went up.
Thanks for that mate. I always liked him and I thought he was exceptional in our promotion team of 2016. Never quite sure what happened as he hasn't really kicked on in his career, shame I think
Smashing kid is George. Had the pleasure of his company at the POTY awards night. He would have loved a new contract.
He scored that last minute winning goal against Peterborough. Oakwell went mental. Bit of a soft header if truth be told.
Loved him. Proper grafter and there was a good thread where a poster revealed himself as George's dad. http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/so-who-is-the-poster-named-observer.245074/
Real favourite of mine. He wasn't one of these fancy new full backs who appear to be judged more on their attacking threat than their defensive skills. That wasn't him, but he could defend and he could defend properly. When he tackled someone, which he did as regular as clockwork, they stayed tackled. If he'd been born 25 years earlier he would have played the majority of his career at a higher level than he has. Personally I think his skill set is hugely undervalued in the modern game and I still prefer a full back that will put the opposition winger into the wall bottom than one who can fly up the wing but can't defend. We've had a lot worse than George since we let him go. And he's got a proper name.
Best of luck to him. He gave his all for us. I notice Paul Tisdale is the Rovers manager. He did good work at Exeter and MK despite getting the sack at the latter. It will be interesting to see how they both get on at Rovers.
the best part of this post is you wrote at 2 mins to midnight and edited it at 4.23 am. Thats dedication to the BBS that is.
This. Love it. George is on my list of players I was gutted to see leave, alongside Brad Potts. Neither of them were world beaters, just honest-to-goodness solid players. The kind I loved in my youth (and still do).
I loved George like a son, the lad just summed up Barnsley, our back line was straighter than a roman road when he was marshalling it, think we averaged less than a goal a game against when he was in team
I liked defenders that can defend so George Williams will always be up there as one of the best I've seen. He wasn't classy but did his job. Positionally great and never done for pace due to his awareness. (Danny Wilson brought some good players in during his second spell).
And we had James Bree breaking through and signed Andy Yiadom. Both better than George I'm afraid, as time has shown.
