Just as a few of us thought, he wasn't unprofessional he was just a young Football player wanting to play Football and not waste his time sat on a bench and playing a few minutes cameo where it's tough to make a difference.
I think Val has touched a nerve here , minds you I believe there are certain things that should be kept in house , this being one of them
"I maybe pushed the loan move a little more than I should have" This plus his comments about the system / him being a winger only are probably what VI was referring to. There'll be others not getting as many starts as they'd like, but not moaning about it.
Oh dear. That's a really poor interview. He says he wanted more football. Then says he was involved a lot with Barnsley so his fitness is good. In his first interview, he said he was a winger and that's all he knew. In this interview he says Ipswich play a 4-3-3 and that suits him, which is obviously a similar formation of the front 3 we play (though suspect the tactics are different). I think the thought that springs to mind is its a very immature interview to have given, and not one that will do him many favours.
Maybe the Tweet from Thomas instigated Val's comments that said he was unprofessional. Lesson is don't Tweet or stick your comments on social media
He said joining Ipswich was going to help him getting back into enjoying football which suggests there was issues. He'd no need to say it
We play 3-4-3, a system that does not have wingers. 4-3-3 can have wingers, and indeed that is probably the system Cardiff will use on Wednesday. Having said that, when it is obvious that the team is not playing wingers, Thomas has to try much harder to fit in elsewhere in the system. There are faults on both sides, and VI should have kept quiet
Perhaps it’s just a classic case of it’s not worked out here for him and maybe a move is simply best for club and player
I did mean front 3, so you're right on that point. However, in a front 3, you're still expected to be an attacking threat and if the ball is on the opposite side, you're expected to make up a 2 in the box, or be a target. Much of Thomas' spells that I've seen have seen him be a ball carrier and still be in wide positions, where he's cut inside more often (and indeed, got a couple of casual penalties). I agree Ismael should have kept his gob shut and said so at the time of his comments. But Thomas' interview is worse still and I don't envisage his future being at Barnsley.
Not a great interview, he starts by saying I was doing what I thought was best for my career. Reading between the lines he wanted to play more and suspect probably didn’t go about it right way. Not unusual in a young person to go about an issue at work in the wrong way, I know I did and learnt as got older. Don’t agree with how VI went about it either but you would have thought Thomas would have an advisor who would have told him to keep his head down and let his football do talking whilst at Ipswich.
Unfortunately I think Luke thinks he’s better than he’s shown in the many chances he’s had for us. His size is against him in the Championship, and he always looks like making a 50/50 ball into a 80/20 ball to them, like he’s scared to challenge - or to get there first for fear of being challenged. He gets dispossessed easily because of it, and I haven’t seen him beat too many men when he has the ball. His composure and finishing also isn’t the best. I can well understand why he doesn’t start games, and why a manager might lose faith in him to deliver. Just observations on what I’ve seen, and nothing against him at all, but he needs to look at his performances and maybe just admit that he hasn’t pulled up any trees on the pitch for any of the managers here he’s worked under. We’re an improved side but I personally don’t think Luke has improved.
