This is what happens when you appoint club legends to the manager's seat. You can understand why the likes of Redfearn and McCarthy would never consider the job at Barnsley. Reputations to be lost inevitably. Lampard is Chelsea's all-time leading goal scorer, with hundreds of matches and a shed load of England caps as well. What could go wrong? Well spending £200 million last summer didn't help with none of those signings making a difference. With their season petering out to almost nothing you can see why he had to go. They obviously couldn't face the prospect of another humiliation at Oakwell. Shame really because we might just have done it to them again. We might yet, but I would rather Lampard had still been in charge when they come.
His problem was wasting cash on big money flops. When he wasn't allowed to sign anyone he did well and his coaching legacy there will be the amount of academy lads he gave a debut to. The likes of Abraham and Giroud are good strikers but not going to win you the league.
In fairness it seems to work for Chelsea. Don't know if it's still the case but I know I have seen stats before showing Chelsea's record of winning trophies since Abramovich arrived and they were the most successful of the English clubs.
I actually think we have a better chance Prince. Firstly Lampard would take the Cup seriously and will know you don't beat lower league opposition by simply turning up. Secondly, Tuchel seems like Ismail version 2.0 so may have a transition period to his style of play. Seems to fall out with people as well. All that said, they will "draw" fouls all over the pitch, foul us without conceding free kicks etc. I think VAR would have made more of a difference than the manager An amusing aside, the BBC asked for other manager reactions, Pep, Hodgson etc all sympathetic and re-assuring. Southampton guy said basically, not my problem mate. LoL Reminded me of the tale of when Led Zepplin's tour manager introduced himself to Bob Dylan and he replied: I dont walk up to you and burden you with my problems do I?
That Gary Chuckle doesn’t half talk some garbage. He’s said “If you’re Frank Lampard, you have to take the Chelsea job.” No you don’t. If he loves the club as much as everybody reckons, he’d have refused the job on the grounds of not being experienced enough. He knew that, we all knew it. He should have thought about the damage a rookie boss could do to the club and got his head down, done the time and earned a reputation as a manager. The Chelsea job would definitely have come round again but he’d have been in a position to do it justice.
Champions league is part of the problem. How many times do we hear players want to leave clubs because they want champions League football. On the other foot Clubs will struggle to attract top class players if not in The Champions league. Crazy World.
But isn’t that exactly like players in L1 having ambitions of Championship football, and Championship players wanting premiership?
Agree. A lot of players finish the careers trophy less as a result. It became more important for Wenger at Arsenal. I'm convinced they sacrificed League titles in a fruitless quest for the Champions League.
It appears they are disappointed with the lack of progress after spending so much money in the summer. To be fair to Lampard, three ‘marquee’ signings this summer, Ziyech, Werner and Havertz, weren’t signings he requested. £160mill on players selected for purchase by people higher up the food chain, but he’s blamed when they haven’t performed when selected. He, conversely, really wanted Chilwell, they paid £50mill to back him on it, and you could argue he’s been their best player. He was lumbered with an absolute joke of a goalkeeper in Kepa and was desperate for someone else - Mendy isn’t the same level as say Allison or Ederson but he was about the best they could get and has been an improvement - and even he was selected by Petr Cech, not Lampard. He needed experience and quality in the back line - and was only allowed to sign a free transfer of a once great player who is mid thirties and well past his best. In my eyes he’s been judged against his overachievement last season, when their league position was much higher than anticipated. Very poor on their part I think.
