And if we lock them down the rest can carry on as normal. Well not according to staff at the hospital in this tweet.

A lad who some of mates used to knock about with in Sheffield died the other week. 40 years old and fit as the butcher's dog. Absolutely horrendous.

COVID kills all ages but the biggest factor is age. In the first two weeks of 2021 there were 13,300 COVID related deaths in England. 98% of the deaths were people aged over 50. 83% were over 70.

The sooner the vaccination programme helps eradicate the worst cases of this disease the sooner normal life can resume for everybody, hopefully.

What about the poster who several times has suggested the elderly be locked away because they are the ones that die or are seriously ill

Correct. Nobody has said that. We all know age is the biggest factor along with pre existing medical conditions but nobody has ever said it solely kills old people.

Still hasn't said it only kills the elderly. Clearly it's the main factor as the average age of Covid deaths has actually increased. Sadly with more deaths in terms of pure numbers more younger people will die too.
Stories of young healthy people dying wre of course tragic but mercifully not very common.

I don't think anyone said it doesn't kill young, healthy people - just that the risk is very low. Which remains true.

I'm posting this because Covid is scary. And the news and information we are given is particularly scary. I think it's always important that we go back to the evidence for balance when we hear of individual cases. The individual cases we do hear of are noteworthy and newsworthy because they aren't common. You won't read about an 80 year old who died in the press because there are so many of them, but the young person who previously had no underlying health conditions you clearly will.

Just one other point. That is in no way to detract or minimise the death of an older person, all of whom are someone's friend or family members. It is purely to reiterate that Covid disproportionately affects the very old.

Once we get to April with all over 50s and vulnerable having at least their first dose we will be in a far better position but of course healthy under 50s will need hospital treatment occasionally and maybe die but it's very rare in the grand scheme of things.

Have to hope that Germany are talking BS about the AstraZeneca vaccine for over 65s though as my mum had it yesterday out of the blue.
