“Contagion” the 2011 film inspired vaccine strategy says Nick Hancock, in an interview with LBC Radio. Matt Hancock said he had watched the film - which is about a deadly virus - and insisted the UK ordered enough jabs for its population. Contagion, which stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon, looks at what would happen in the event of a virus spreading around the world. He said the movie was not his "primary" source of advice but (because he watched the film) he knew when the vaccine was approved the demand for it would be "huge" So Hancock’s management of the pandemic is based on the film “Contagion” Bojo Johnson’s management of the country is also based on a film: Monty Python’s Flying Circus Grant Shapps has based his entire career on the film “Clueless” and has been incredibly successful I'm sure other prominent Members of the government and Tory elite will have done something similar
I saw this article earlier. And the suggestion was they used some of it as a guide to the vaccination becoming a shitshow and why they've paid way more than most nations to stockpile vaccines in the hope they work. As an aside, if people haven't watched contagion, and you can stomach it given the current situation, it's uncannily accurate (other than mortality, but obviously it was made for hollywood).
Isn't that because it's based on previous recent epidemics like the deadly fou outbreak and Sars? The world has had a lot of warnings in the past 20 years and instead of taking those warnings and making proper plans the majority of the world adopted an 'it will never happen to me' approach. It demonstrates how pathetic the world's leaders have been for some time now that a Hollywood screenwriter took the deadly epidemics more seriously than governments did
I think its definitely safe to say those that suffered SARS were generally more prepared for this and also willing to act faster and to further lengths. The wests response has been exceptionally poor, with the populist nutjobs being some way less effective than just... poor.
The UK (4) had more cases of SARS than South Korea (3) - neither had any fatalities. They did have more MERS though (our fatality rate from MERS was 75%!!) - even then they only had 184 cases of MERS and 38 deaths...
I can't work out if you spend your life on google or you consume volumes of encyclopaedia before bedtime ;-)
Taken out of context somewhat, as really it was meant as a joke, but makes a good headline. Perhaps the EU commission should have watched Contagion too?
You sure. ? EMA membership wouldn’t affect vaccine rollout Boris Johnson said Britain’s vaccine rollout “would still be at the starting blocks” if we were still part of the European Medicines Agency. As FactCheck has previously reported, an EU provision passed into UK law in 2012 meant that the government had legal powers to act alone in temporarily authorizing the use of a new vaccine without waiting for the European Medicines Agency to sign it off. This was confirmed in statements by the government and the UK’s independent regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, who said this law was used to approve the Pfizer Covid vaccine unilaterally in December last year, when Britain was still in the Brexit provision period. So Britain was still subject to the processes of the European Medicines Agency when the first vaccine was approved, but EU law gave the UK regulator emergency powers to act alone.
