Every stop in play (goal kick, corner, free kick, throw in, drop ball, sub, arguing with ref, injuries, VAR, the list obviously goes on and on) takes up way, way longer than the actual additional time ever reflects. All teams take the mick with it when winning marginally in the late second half, but some teams make a mockery of it all game long as part of their game plan. If it was up to you would you stick with the current system, or go with a system with maybe 70-80 minutes on the clock - but every time play stops the clock stops? Then the whistle goes on the exact moment of full time. The average game of football these days only actually has about 60-70 minutes played when you take away every stoppage.
Don't nearly half the games played actually have less than 45 minutes with the ball in play? If that as teh case stopping the clock would mean a game of football would last nearly 3 hours. Not sure that's feasible. I know the American's do it in American Football, but for football? not so sure. Keep it as it is and get the refs to be more vigilant with time wasting
Back in the 20th century, the TV people at one World Cup showed the time the ball was in play at the end of each game. Invariably it was less than 1 hour. If the clock was stopped when the ball was out of play we would only need 30 minutes each way. One downside of this would be that goalkeepers would take even longer on goal kicks.
Not sure what happened to the 6 second rule for goalkeepers but they only have to introduce common sense and allow say 10 seconds for any set piece from the point at which the ball has been set or is in the keepers or throwers hands. Any longer and its a yellow card. PLayers would stop timewasting if rules are enforced.
Once read an article and it was an hour on average. Apart from refs cracking down on time wasting or players 'manipulating' certain situations then it'll never change. If it did and we actually played a full 90 minutes with the ball in play that's be the end of 19:45 kick offs.......... No public transport after and God forbid no time for a post match pint!!!!!!
Don't need any more messing around with the game. Refs should come down harder on deliberate time wasting though.
If my memory serves me right, in the early days of football on Sky, they used to show the minutes ball was in play and it averaged around 60 - 65 minutes.
I believe one of the organising bodies, possibly FIFA, actually had this on a list on possible improvements they were considering a while back. The game to be 30 mins each half but clock stopped when ball out of play/injuries etc.. Ill google and see what i can find.
https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/sport/amp/football/40311889 Here you go. Plenty of other ideas were discussed as a means of increasing sportsmanship and removing negatives from the game.
Oddly I was annoyed by us in that respect when we played Preston and Sollbauer went down injured just inside normal time. I was screaming at the television "get up you idiot the ref will only add it on". Once the board has gone up it's fair game though. What can I say...I'm fickle
Id be happy if it was done the same as in Rugby where the clock is stopped for substitutions injuries (VAR analysis!) etc Not sure Id bother with throwins and normal free kicks unless the ref stops it so he can give a player a talking to or card
