I've been very upset over the last few days. I think we've done so many things wrong, but I believed it was temporary. I no longer think it is. After what has been announced this week, I can no longer see a way out. February 8th 2020 - that was the day that liberty ended.

So many things appear to have been permanently banned and people throughout the country have been scared into thinking it's the right thing to do.

We even had a poster on here this board saying recently that they believe mask wearing, social distancing and not touching other human beings should be the norm from now on. Now that they thought they would be but that he thought they SHOULD be.

Any ‘temporary’ measure that has neither an end date nor a triggering event that ends that measure is a de facto permanent event.

This talk of new variants puzzles me. Its just as likely to change here as anywhere else regardless of whether we import it or not.

It already has - the Kent varient (B117) sprang up here (among others)

The more cases you have, the more mutations in the virus you will have. That is very basic evolution. Unfortunately, we aren't stopping people importing infections and we aren't stopping community infections until it is too late.

Our best *long term* hope has been a faster spreading variant with fewer symptoms - one that would out-compete the other variants and confer immunity without a 6 figure death toll. That hasn't changed, but we are seeing faster spreading variants with similar (if not increasing) severe symptoms and the potential for vaccine escape.

Here's some hope - ooh and away it goes. Here's some more hope - oh sorry, that's gone too.

These absolute ******* need to be up in court some day.

It's almost as if they're massaging the news cycle ;)

When they announced the successes last week , Vaccination figures, Oxford jab reducing transmission in 67% of cases. I commented that this week we'd get the negative 'news' and here we are.

We're governed by a badly run PR company.

Hi Helen, some progress being made. It appears my Dad HAS had Covid (they had before said they thought it was a false positive). He won't get a jab for 4 months apparently, as he should have antibodies. Thankfully Mum hasn't caught it from him and her self isolation ends today, which will mean we can get her jab fixed up.

There are loads of issues with social care, which hopefully can be resolved too. A new mattress arrived yesterday for my Dad. (He's incontinent & my Mum is constantly cleaning up after him). Some positives there. Once she's had her second jab I'm hoping to be able to get over there, taking precautions with a visor, mask & gloves, just to be on the safe side.

That's good to hear. Anything that can make the workload less for your mum will be a great help. Nothing worse than wanting to be there to help and not being able to, so frustrating.

OK seeing as you've asked (and I'm on leave this week)...
despite my best efforts and earlier post (where you pretended I'd simply agreed with you)
    This article you've linked

is 830 words and has the headline
Covid-19: Starmer says 10-year jail term for travel lies 'empty threat'
The article's main point being that the 10 year sentence is an empty threat based on what judges will actually sentence people*.

And the list of offences you screenshot doesn't really even fit with the headline
article here if anyone wants to read

*reminder - this was one of my points regarding the legal professions reaction to the announcement. It's a complex and nuanced discussion and I managed to discuss them without mentioning paedos ;)

    Whereas you posted...
26 words simply comparing being a paedo with telling a lie.

But - well I suppose we ought to be able to search the nuanced meaning beneath your blunt and inappropriate language, and to see that you're genuinely an intelligent bloke who fully understands the socio political consequences of the government announcement - rather than a bellend who's answer to any legal conundrum is 'but paedos'

I'm particularly enjoying the latest message featuring celebs who've not missed a single £, in comfortable domestic situations and futures assured telling the plebs to stay at home 'just that bit longer' and it'll all be fine.

    Them and us indeed.

I don’t believe anyone on here is actually stupid enough to believe these restrictions are permanent, so what’s the point in keep saying they are? Fear mongering? Just trolling?

There are loads of things that I didn't believe or foresee happening this time last year that have subsequently happened.

No I don't think that the restictions are permanent but I do think there are ones that could be around for years rather than months, such as foreign travel restrictions.

I also think that mask wearing in certain circumstances could become part of our culture.

I have to ask, when in your opinion are restrictions likely to be relaxed ?

BTW I'm not looking for a virtual 'punch up' on this, just your view. :D

Many "celebrities" haven't worked for a year and plenty in the industry are part of the excluded 3 million being self-employed. You might not have noticed, but filming was delayed/cancelled for many projects, there are no comedy clubs, no music gigs, no festivals, etc. Quite a few have given freely their time to entertain people during the pandemic too. Not all of them are much more financially comfortable than anyone else.

Some have even gone "above and beyond" - Hugh Bonneville is a Covid Marshall. Bobby Norris (TOWIE) is vaccinating people.

Edit: Some though, have been absolute nobs - Ian Brown, Van Morrison.
