Doing an extension at home and Found this in the loft. It was at the very edge by the wall plate where the internal brickwork meets the roof. Best guess is that it’s been there since the house was built in 30s/40s. I can’t see it getting there any other way.

If anyone can help with what it says or what it is or what it means would be great

    Thanks in advance

That looks like probably the Russian word for the Serbian city of Belgrade.

If it isn't, then it's something 'white', because Belgrade (Beograd) means White City.

It is some sort of Cyrillic, but not Serbian Cyrillic, hence my guess at Russian.

Edit: it is Serbian Cyrillic. I had misread the last letter for another 'A', but it's a 'D', just not written in the way I had seen in a book.

It’s Belgrade’s coat of arms. Theirs has that design.

    Edit: According to Wikipedia:

The original coat of arms was commissioned in 1931 by Belgrade mayor Milan Nešić. The winning proposal was sketched by Đorđe Andrejević-Kun. The arms remained in continued use until the conclusion of the Second World War. Between 1946 and 1991, it included a red star on top to symbolize communist rule. The use of the arms was amended and regulated in 2003.[1] The small (or lesser) coat of arms* is the original design by Đorđe Andrejević-Kun.

*The design you have there is the original small coat of arms, there are three and the middle one has a crown on top and the larger one has a double headed eagle around it with the crown on top.

Thanks guys. I have no idea how it could have got where I found it other than it being put there when the house was built.

May be over seas workers but not sure with the property being 30s/40s

    Fascinating post -

is it something that would be worn on an army? uniform?

Wonder if it was brought by someone who moved from Serbia to the U K at the end of WW2. Do you have access to the Property Deeds which would show who lived at the address in the 1940/50 period.

Also old Electoral Registers held at Barnsley Archives would give occupants names.

So that date would coincide with the property being build between 30s/40s but would we have had over seas builders at that time? I’m not quite sure

Just seen this on Wiki too under 'Serbia-United Kingdom relations':

'In the 1920s, Serbs went to England to study banking, finances and economics, while in the 1930s mining engineering was the main field of study.[9]'.

That would make sense if you are in Barnsley that Serbs studying mining engineering would be around, possibly not building houses though.
